For many individuals, getting in and out of their bath or shower can be intimidating, even daunting. Not every person with a physical impairment, for example, has someone on hand all the time to help them and, in fact, many do not want that, as they may value their independence too highly – they may want to do this on their own, independently.
Most of us take enjoying a bath or a shower for granted and do not always appreciate the fact that many other people may find it difficult to get into their bath – or shower – because they may suffer from limited ability or movement, or simply because they are scared they may slip and fall, and hurt themselves.
Traditional bathtubs and showers are not always designed to consider these issues and the needs and requirements of those with mobility issues, such as individuals who may suffer from physical disability, whether their problem is less severe, or whether they may have a real serious problem. But, there is always hope – even if you find moving around on your own not that easy.
Of course certain people may no longer be able to take a bath or shower unassisted ...
... as they may be severely compromised, for example quadriplegics and similar affected people. But many other that suffer from limited movement may indeed still be able to enjoy a shower or bath on their own – they just need a few adjustments to their bathroom and shower, and to their bathtub, to be able to clean themselves unassisted. This requires a new look at the bathtub or shower – or both.
For many it may mean simply to have their older style – or retro look – bathroom changed. So, instead of having a tub that sits above the floor on four feet, or a shower with a high edge to step over, one may look at the latest, modern options. These are designed to make ease of movement in and out, so much easier. They are designed in a way that you literally step in and out – you do not have to swing your legs over the bathtub’s edge, or lift your legs to be in the shower.
These new designs add feelings of reassurance for those that use them, as the fear of falling and slipping is no longer an issue. The tubs are designed so that you simply open and close the tub’s door. While it is closed you can relax and have your bath, then empty it and step out once more. You do not spill water on the floor and slip in it as you get out, as the floor will be dry if you do not spill over the edge while taking the bath. The same is true for the shower: you walk in, clean yourself – and walk out afterwards.
These designs have made life so much easier for those with a physical problem, or those that may be nervous of hurting themselves. And best of all: you remain independent as there is no need for an assistant to help you – unless, of course, you suffer from a much more serious problem. And, of course, these showers and tubs are available as combination shower/tubs too, which offer the individual even more options.
Because these bathtubs and showers are relatively new, as opposed to older tubs and showers, they often come with improved safety features, such as anti-slip surfaces and grab bars for added safety. Depending on the service you order your walk-in shower from, you may find that you also have a handheld shower with different spray patterns, or lots of grab bars to accentuate greater safety.
These showers – and bathtubs - are fast gaining ground in countries such as the US, where people are aware of the options – also the latest, most advanced and most practical tubs and showers for use by those with limited movement, or those that want to prevent accidents and injuries, which are much more likely in the older type tubs and showers.
