Short ...
... History

The American Eagle Bullion Program was expanded to include the American Platinum Eagle in 1997. The platinum coin now joined the gold and silver coins that had been available since 1986. The United States Mint has only ever produced the Platinum Eagle coin in investment-grade platinum. The US Government guarantees the weight, content, and purity of only Platinum Eagles, which are the only platinum bullion coins.
The American Platinum Eagle coins have been available in four distinct sizes over the duration of the series. Each one has a legal tender face value and the declared weight in pure platinum.

$100 face value per ounce.
$50 face value per a half ounce.
1/4 ounce: face value of $25.
10 cents on the dollar in weight.

From the beginning of the series in 1997 through 2008, the four denominations were available for both bullion coins and collectible proof coins. From 2006 to 2008, all four options included the coveted uncirculated coins. Since 2009, only the one-ounce size of the proof coins has been available. From 2009 through 2013, no bullion coins were created; however, one-ounce-sized coins were once again issued starting in 2014.
