Ada Compliance Checklist For Websites Accessibility

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is highly complicated legislation in the area of accessibility, especially when it comes to website accessibility. If you want to create a new website or update your existing website, it is important to know about the ADA compliance checklist for websites. At Mystic Web Designn, we come across the subject of accessibility on a daily basis. We suggest that you know the following about the topic when creating a new website or redesigning an existing one.
Relationship Between ADA & Websites
The ADA has been related to websites in a more or less complicated way. There is no direct mention of digital compliance in the legislation even when it has undergone many amendments. This means that it is eventually the courts that interpret how the law applies to websites. Just because the ADA doesn't make any direct mention of websites, it doesn't mean that you can ignore complying with this law. Almost always the judgments in the case of lawsuits have been against websites.
Many courts have ruled commercial websites to be places of public accommodation and thus need to comply ...
... with ADA regulations.
Compliance Checklist
At Mystic Web Designn, we suggest following this ADA compliance checklist to ensure your website is not open to potential lawsuits:
Read the legislation documentation
There should be an alt tag for all media files and maps
The hyperlinks must have a descriptive anchor text
The online forms must have descriptive html tags
The textual content must be structured with proper heading tags
All the webpages should have skip navigation links
Any video on your website must have subtitles, audio description, and transcripts
If there is any PDF file, it should be accessible
All fonts must be accessible to all users
The color contrast must meet the Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) guidelines
There should be a written caption for every audio file on the website
Any HTML table must have column headers, cell information, and row identifiers
Any call to action (CTA) button must feature an accessible name and a label as per ARIA
There must be a dedicated page on the website accessibility policy
Your website must be accessible through keyboard navigation
The website’s accessibility must be tested as per the WCAG
The website must have readily accessible contact information so that users can ask for accessibility information
Website accessibility check must be automated to ensure the detection of any important accessibility issue
The WCAG
The WCAG guidelines categorize website accessibility challenges into 3 levels.
Level A: These are the most important issues and cover problem areas that can adversely restrict the ability of a disabled visitor to use or navigate a website.
Level AA: These challenges are related more to functionality. It addresses areas where changes need to be made to allow users with disabilities to make the most of a website.
Level AAA: These are the highest standards of issues and involve improving and expanding on the challenges identified within the previous two levels. Achieving Level AAA compliance is typically outside the reach of most websites.
If you want to ensure your website is fully compliant with the ADA and other state regulations, you should rely on the experience and expertise of accomplished website designers and developers.
