For years and years I have polished my listening skills. This medical transcription job is really fit for me. I work from home. Many people say that if I would work in an office I could earn more but having the comfort of looking after my 5-year-old and working beside her is better than any price could pay. Actually working as a medical transcriptionist doesn't pay badly at all. Even if I work from home I would still get a good hourly pay. The good thing with it is I can control my work hours. I can also work well unsupervised.

"Mommy can sit on your lap," my daughter said.

"Sure sweetie," I quipped as I started typing my new report. Today, I am working on a cardiology report. Working as a transcriptionist isn't that hard at all. Nowadays, we have speech to text technology and we just edit minor errors in punctuation and grammar. There are also some special cases when the speech to text won't work especially if the doctor has a strange accent.

"The left ventriculogram, noted some, apical hypokinesis. In view of these findings, surgical consultation was requested, and the patient was seen and ...
... evaluated by Dr. Schnauzer." I read on the computer screen. This was very easy to edit for I just have to remove the commas. This medical speech to text program inputs commas for every pause they make in the recording. So I retyped it as, "The left ventriculogram noted some apical hypokinesis. In view of these findings, surgical consultation was requested and the patient was seen and evaluated by Dr. Schnauzer."

My daughter was trying to make the words on my computer screen, "vveen...tri...cu...lo...gram..." she was trying to read what I was I doing. She is just starting to learn how to read and she is already reading strange medical terms. I was smiling at her as I explained, "That's right baby †a ventriculogram is a test the doctors do to check how your heart works. This one is said as hy-po-ki-ne-sis, it means that the heart is moving slowly so it cannot pump blood well."
This age kids ask a lot of questions. So I always do my best to involve her in what I am doing so that she would not feel left out. At least, my daughter knows what is going with her body even at a very young age.

"So this person is sick mommy?"

"Yes, so we need to help her. That's why we are making this report." I explained. I settled her down on the floor and handed her a doll, "Now I want you to check dolly's heart and tell me about it me later so I could make a report about it ok." My daughter followed suit and I continued with my work.

This was an easy report to do. As a transcriptionist, we do a lot of proof reading so that we can make sure our report is accurate. A good medical background or a certificate from medical transcriptionist institution would really come in handy.
