The Sustainable Fashion Bag: Why Jute Bags Are The New Luxury

The distinct fashion bags in a well-lit boutique store in a posh mall will draw your attention and make you unable to turn away. Who said jute bags only come in the shade of golden beige? You only need to enter the store to become mesmerised by the eye-catching, vibrant, colourful bags, sometimes paired with traditional and folk art themes like Ajrakh, kilim, or ikkat.
With a substantial base in Bengal, India, the jute bag industry, manufacturers, and jute bag exporters are bent on generating higher profits from the growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives for shopping bags and carry bags. But that is not all. The fashion industry is exceptionally responsive to the winds of change, which has resulted in a huge growth of luxury-level sustainable jute fashion bags.
Luxury Fashion Forwarded With Jute And Eco-Textiles
Sustainability is not a fashion trend. It is a movement. And much like the Industrial Revolution, it is going to change a lot of things, including several perceptions and senses. One of them is how the current world views luxury.
Today, the labels of luxury are changing. Organic, breathability, ...
... cruelty-free, and fair trade are some of the labels that conscious shoppers look for and don't mind paying a higher price for.
It is praised that jute and canvas are extremely strong, adaptable, and have outstanding colour retention properties. These materials maintain their beauty while carrying heavy weights and withstanding extreme weather conditions. Much like denim, these textiles are multi-utilitarian.
Style-wise, the bags don't always have to seem rustic and rugged. Many designers have introduced elegant, festive styles and chic designs with silk and brocade elements, stone-studded and sea-shell encrusted designs that are all extremely popular and opulent.
A wide range of multinational fashion brands have featured jute collections and changed the image of the golden fibre as simply a strong textile for making sacks. This opinion is shared by S Roy, the secretary of the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), who was quoted as saying that "the industry has higher hopes to exhibit an increasing trend as individuals test the new items".
Cotton Bag Manufacturers Are Not Far Behind.
Other than jute, cotton bags and canvas bags are the closest allies. From luxury luggage to everyday fashion, these sustainable materials are prevalent and there is no looking back.
Because to add to the glamour and attractive styles, these eco-bags are bringing more valuable assets together. It includes cultural diversity, artisan value, women's empowerment, rural development, and so many other serious and powerful reforms—both social and environmental.
While the larger picture of luxury in the past was afflicted by several social injustices, animal welfare concerns, and unjust trading practices, the new parts of sustainability are going to alleviate all that with greater consciousness.
Product Diversification Is Critical To Reviving The Indian Jute Industry.
The product diversification trend started way back in the 1990s, which proved to be a significant turnaround tactic. But while that was more of a style trend, today, jute, cotton, canvas, and similar textiles are highlighted as the ultimate forces to power sustainable fashion as an environmentally beneficial raw material in addition to being a key textile fibre.
India contributes more than 50% of the yearly global production of raw jute and jute products, respectively. With over 4 million farmers and 232,000 workers in the sector, the jute industry in India is vastly unorganised, which raises new problems very often.
While recently, the COVID pandemic struck many jute mills, causing many to shut down due to rising costs of raw jute production and low sales margin, product diversification and demand from the fashion industry could save the surviving mills in the future.
Several market analysts warn that annual domestic and export demand is marginally higher than production. Jute bag exporters supply an average of 212,000 tonnes annually or 16.5% of total jute bag production.
