In the third variety, both the laser and material surface are stationary and galvo mirrors move the laser beam over the surface.

However, in case of varied surfaces that differ in height or thickness, more sophisticated focusing mechanisms will be made use of like dynamic auto focus systems where in the parameters in real time to adapt to the changes of the material during the process of engraving. In some instances, the height and depth of the material surface is checked with devices which make use of ultrasound, infrared, and even visible light pointed at the engraving surface, which are referred to as pilot lasers assist in determining the optimal spot to focus and eliminate the unwanted areas in the material surface effectively.
