Work with an Expert for the Ideal Deer Management Plan for your Land
With a deer management plan in place, you don’t have to worry about deer destroying your property. They can use it as a place for shelter, obtain food, and access to water. When the conditions are good, the population can increase too much. This makes resources too thin to spread around. When there aren’t enough resources all of them will struggle to find enough to survive.
A successful deer management plan helps with the balance. The process involves surveying your land and making any necessary adjustments. This can include food plots, removing debris, and discussions about allowing hunting on your property. There are many elements to any deer management plan as it takes efforts from all directions for it to work correctly.
Food
Deer will reside where their basic needs are met. Is there enough food in the area for them to survive? If not, the deer management plan will incorporate ideas to bring more food to the area ongoing. In the meantime, food plots may have to be created where the deer can find the food they aren’t getting ...
... from the land. It doesn’t take long for the deer to discover the food plots. Once they do, they continue to come back for more!
Water
A water source has to be in the area for deer to survive. Access to the water shouldn’t be difficult for them or a long journey. The deer management plan will evaluate where the water is located and any barriers to reaching it. Ideas may have to be implemented to offer more water or to help the deer access it with less difficulty.
Shelter
Deer rely on their surroundings to blend in and stay hidden. They use their environment for protection from the elements. Does your land offer enough of that to them? If not, the deer management plan will include ways to do this. Often, there is more natural shelter out there than you think. An expert can point it out to you and give you a good idea of where the deer reside.
Remove Debris
When you remove debris from the property, it is important to make sure you aren’t removing anything the deer may use for shelter. To you, it may be in the way but to them, it may be a way to stay hidden and warm when it is cold outside. An expert should help you with the deer management plan and discuss any potential removal of debris.
Hunting
Preventing overpopulation on the land is essential or the deer will struggle to survive. A lack of resources for all of them to live can cause many to starve. It also increases the risk of disease spreading among them. The deer management plan should discuss hunting options. By allowing hunters to use the property, the balance of the right population for the resources available is possible.
Charging the hunters to use the land for this purpose is a great way to generate money. That money can be used to take care of the land, pay for your deer management plan, or extra money in your pocket. Most hunters don’t mind paying to use land where there is plenty of deer available. Their goal is to fill their tag!
Further Evaluations
A deer management plan isn’t set in stone. It isn’t put in motion and then forgotten about. It has to be further evaluated. At least once a year an expert should assess the food supply, water access, shelter, and the population again. Based on their findings, they can share if the deer management plan is still effective. If anything needs to be modified, they can discuss options with you.
