What causes toothache?
Of the many causes of toothache, the most common is decay from acid producing bacteria in the mouth caused by sugars that corrode tooth enamel. Pain occurs as decay exposes tooth nerve endings. Decay continues until treated, the pain intensifying when infection sets in the surrounding tissues. The tooth does not mend itself.

Other causes may be from gum disease, cracked teeth and worn teeth. Lack of saliva and hereditary factors can also contribute to tooth decay.

How to prevent toothache
