What is a toothache?
Toothache is any sharp or severe pain in and around a tooth. Without correct diagnosis and timely treatment, the potential exists for the toothache to get worse. Your best next step is to contact an emergency dentist to have your specific situation diagnosed and treated.

What causes toothache?
Of the many causes of toothache, the most common is decay from acid producing bacteria in the mouth caused by sugars that corrode tooth enamel. Pain occurs as decay exposes tooth nerve endings. Decay continues until treated, the pain intensifying when infection sets in the surrounding tissues. The tooth does not mend itself.
Other causes may be from gum disease, cracked teeth and worn teeth. Lack of saliva and hereditary factors can also contribute to tooth decay.
How to prevent toothache
Having a toothache is a big incentive to prevent them recurring, so it pays to know how to a thing or two about good oral health practices.

Twice daily brushing and daily flossing are essential. Fluoride in water and toothpaste can help too, but ultimately if you want to prevent a toothache, the very best thing you can do is commit to looking after your teeth for life. Short term protection can be found in mouthwash, which lowers the bacteria in saliva. Stimulating saliva production by chewing sugar-free gum can also help.
Regular visits to your dentist for a preventive care dental check and clean are another key to preventing a toothache.
