One thing that is extremely easy to overlook in car buying these days is the odometer. It's a standard measurement tool on all cars, and for some reason, it often gets overlooked when buying a new or used vehicle — even when it's something like a sports car.
When you're buying a car, it's not just about choosing the make and model of the car but also how many miles it has on it. The odometer can be very important in car buying because many factors have to be considered when purchasing a vehicle.
What is odometer fraud?
The odometer on the car is a device that measures how many miles have been driven. While it's possible to buy a vehicle with a very high mileage reading, this isn't really something that happens on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, if the reader gets replaced or stolen, then they can be altered or reported as stolen.
What are the signs of odometer fraud?
Do you wonder, "how can you tell if a digital odometer has been rolled back?" The number recorded on the odometer is ...
... lower than it should be. In such situations, it can be a red flag that points to a problem with the odometer.
For most people, odometer fraud isn't something that is about to happen. There are key signs of whether or not the odometer has been rolled back and if you're being scammed.
Here are some signs that something has gone wrong with the odometer reading:
1. If there are significant dents and scratches, but the odometer reading is too low, then it is a problem. It points to potential tampering with the odometer through a digital odometer rollback tool.
2. Did they try to hide the odometer during your inspection? Their fishy behavior can point to probable fraud.
3. When you ask about maintenance records, does anything seem off or out of place? Does it look like a recent issue or something that was an issue a few months ago, will suddenly show up again in the records?
4. Does the car or the dealership have a history of odometer fraud? If so, then there is a fair chance that they might do it again.
5. Does the vehicle have an issue with the VIN or any other stickers or labels? Sometimes, this is done to hide something that looks like an odometer rollback.
6. Does the odometer look old or have minor damage to it? This can be a sign that someone rolled back the odometer to hide something
