Types of Wireless Networks

1. Local Area Network (LAN) - this type of wireless network exists in a single site like offices that can used variety of components to connect to computers, printers, and data storage devices. The very common type is Wi-Fi.

2. Personal Area Network (PAN) - this basically centralized around the devices of a single person in a given location. It could have computers, mobile phones, video game consoles or any peripheral devices. The common example for this is Bluetooth which is present at home and even small offices.

3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) - its span is across a city, geographical area, or campuses. The size of a MAN covers several square miles while LAN is only a certain building or area. Most large organization or campuses uses MAN to manage key components like electrical systems and HVAC.

4. Wide Area Network (WAN) - this one covers a very large area such as entire state, city or country. The internet itself is a WAN where it consists of smaller networks such as LAN and MAN.

Setting up your router as an access point, it is then your Master or infrastructure mode. It can cover range of areas with a wireless signal which depends on devices power and antenna type.

c. Ad-Hoc Node (Mesh) - with this, it can keep devices in connecting directly without the need for an access point between that controls the connection. Every device as well must be in this role using the same configuration in order to participate. Ad-hoc devices create a Mesh Network similar to individual or group discussion.
