Pinched Nerve Lower Back

Thousands of people suffer from lower back pain. In many cases, this pain is the result of a pinched nerve. The aggravation and pain can become so overwhelming that simple daily tasks seem almost impossible. Pinched nerve lower back pain can be managed. By understanding what causes the problem and some simple common sense changes to your lifestyle, it is often possible to completely alleviate the pain.
A pinched nerve is nothing more than pressure against the spinal column. What causes that pressure can vary. Often, the problem is related to a slipped or bulging disk. The misaligned disk can cause inflammation resulting in pressure. Typically, an injury or strain to the lower back is the root cause of the pinched nerve.
Those who suffer from pinched nerve lower back pain describe it as shooting or throbbing. Sometimes the pain is localized to the lower back but it can radiate out. This is especially true if the sciatic nerve is involved. This type of pinched nerve pain is a bit more serious and is often recognized by pain which radiates down one or both legs.
Because pinched nerve pain is associated with ...
... inflammation, many people with mild to moderate cases of pain find relief with over the counter anti-inflammatory medication. Others find relief with heat therapy. For those with mild pain, it is often unnecessary to consult a doctor. More severe cases may require medical intervention in the form of prescription medication. Muscle relaxants, pain medication and anti-inflammatory medication are used in varies combinations to provide relief.
In some instances, physical therapy may be suggested. This therapy, which may include massage and chiropractic care is designed to strengthen the back muscles and to correct problems with posture. Physical therapy can be intensive and take several weeks to several months, but it is often the best way to alleviate the symptoms of pinched nerve lower back pain.
Changing some habits may also be required. Repetitive motions at work often cause lower back pain. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time can also contribute to the problem. The worst culprit may be lifting heavy objects. Whenever possible, it is important to correct the movements that aggravate pinched nerves. If your daily responsibilities include heavy lifting, use a weight belt and proper lifting techniques. If you are required to sit or stand for the majority of your day, take breaks whenever possible.
Doctors will often recommend a program of stretching. Yoga postures designed to lengthen the back can be especially helpful for those suffering from lower back pain. Other common sense changes include sleeping on your back, wearing proper shoes and exercising regularly.
Pinched nerve lower back pain does not have to be an ongoing problem. Work closely with your doctor and therapists to develop a program designed to strengthen your back. Medications, massage, and some simple changes may be all that is necessary for a pain free life.
