Seeing pieces of material in your eyes is referred to as floaters. While it can be annoying, it doesn’t affect vision in most individuals. There are some exceptions, and that is when floaters surgery may be considered. For others, the distraction it causes is enough for them to ask about such a procedure. The floaters may be in one or both eyes. If a person has them in one eye, there is a good chance they will eventually experience them in the other eye too.
Are you a Good Candidate?
Not everyone is a good candidate for floaters surgery. Often, the procedure isn’t done unless the floaters are large or they are directly in your line of vision. There are exceptions to this, and each case is evaluated on its own merit. Talk to your eye care specialist about how the floaters are bothering you if surgery is something you are interested in.
It depends on your eyes overall. If you have eye disease or other concerns, it may not be a good option. A person’s overall health also influences if this is a good procedure for them to go through. Your eye specialists will evaluate your needs and the variables to help ...
... make this determination.
What does the Procedure Entail?
The medical term for floaters surgery is a Vitrectomy. The patient is given a local anaesthesia and a small incision is made. The vitreous is removed through that opening. This is a gel type of substance that is clear. It helps the eyes keep their shape.
The extracted gel may be replaced with gas or saltwater. As your eye recovers, the gas or saltwater is naturally replaced by the body with fluid it creates. This is known as Aqueous Humor. If a gas bubble is put in place, your recovery can involve being face down or facing to the side for several days. There are special chairs you can rent for the face down requirement.
The procedure takes an hour or two. Once it is complete the patient is taken into the recovery room. They will stay there for a few hours, with nurses checking on them. The surgeon will give them a final check. Typically, a patient goes home 2 or 3 hours after the procedure is done. They are given instructions for recovery and a follow-up appointment.
What is the Recovery Process?
Most people recover well from floaters surgery. They have very little or no pain associated with the healing process. The area around the eye may be red or swollen for several weeks after the procedure. You will need a ride home from the surgical procedure and not be able to drive for several weeks. Your vision may be blurry for a couple of weeks but should get noticeably better in a few weeks.
It takes about a month to fully recover from floaters surgery. You may have restrictions on movement and the type of work you can do during the recovery. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. It is important to follow the recovery instructions for the best outcome from floaters surgery.
Success Rate
It is important to understand the possible outcome of floaters surgery. While the procedure is safe and effective, there are some risks involved. The surgeon will discuss them in advance to ensure the patient is informed. The recovery will determine how successful the surgery was. Most patients find the floaters are either smaller, they have few floaters, or they are completely eliminated. There is no way to know what the outcome will be until the procedure is done and the healing process is completed.
