As an international standard, ISO 50001 specifies the requirements for organizations to grow, implement, and expand Energy Management Systems. This permits organizations to follow a specific framework that helps them achieve constant improvement in energy performance, efficiency, usage, and consumption. This framework requires the measurements, ISO 50001 documents, and reports, which allow organizations to monitor the progress of their procedures and employees towards energy performance. ISO 50001 needs organizations to establish new policies for an efficient use of energy, to set aims and objectives to meet those policies and review their impacts; genuinely attempting to achieve constant improvements of energy management.
ISO 50001:2018 has been associated with the structure of ISO management system standards such as ISO 9001 Quality management and ISO 14001 Environmental management. The use of a common or High-Level Structure (HLS) is done to ease the integration of management systems that have already been established in an organization. Also, the updated version contains a stronger emphasis on the responsibilities ...
... of top management, to instil a cultural change in the organization.
The purpose of this standard is to allow organizations to establish the systems and processes essential to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use, and consumption. Execution of this standard is intended to lead to decreases in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and other related environmental impacts and energy cost through systematic management of energy. ISO 50001 delivers a framework of requirements for organizations to:
• Grow a policy for more effective use of energy.
• Fix targets and purposes to meet the policy.
• Use data to well understand and make conclusions about energy use.
• Measure the results.
• Review how well the policy works.
• Constantly improve energy management.
ISO 50001 is appropriate to all types and sizes of organizations, irrespective of geographical, cultural, or social conditions. This standard does not set precise quantitative targets; each organization can set their own goals and choose how they will meet these goals. This means that any organization can implement ISO 50001 to establish a baseline and then expand its energy performance at a rate that’s appropriate to its context and abilities.
ISO 50001 is structured in a way that permits organizations to see tangible advantages in a short term. Improving energy performance can provide quick benefits, maximizing the use of its energy sources and energy-related assets by decreasing both energy costs and consumption. Any organization that executes a successful EnMS can:
• Decrease costs and carbon emissions.
• Accomplish energy efficiency & compliance.
• Enhance energy-consuming assets.
• Expand operations and capital cost decisions.
• Advance transparency and communication on the management of energy resources.
• Well, evaluate and prioritize new energy-efficient technologies.
• Make an important contribution to environmental and climate protection.
• Discover potential savings and competitive advantages.
• Improve image.
ISO 50001 is designed according to other ISO management system standards, in particular ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems). Since all three management systems standards are based on the PDCA cycle, and now share the same high-level structure, ISO 50001 can be combined easily to these systems.
There are major components to ISO 50001:2018:
• Scope.
• Normative references.
• Terms and definitions.
• Context of the organization.
• Leadership.
• Planning.
• Support.
• Operation.
• Performance Evaluation.
• Improvement.
ISO 50001 is a voluntary standard; however, organizations can gain a certification of compliance. ISO 50001 consultancy for all types of industries, such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, engineering, etc., and ISO 50001:2018 certification consultancy developed for ISO 50001 energy management system. The certification delivers customers, stakeholders and employees a higher degree of assurance in relation to an organization’s energy performance. It also helps to confirm that the EnMS is working throughout the organization and that it’s constantly improving.
