Flow measurement is an important part of many industries including the petrochemical Gas & Oil industries. Flowmeters help these industries measure the flow of fluids. Well, there are many conventional ways to measure the flow of fluids including mechanical, turbine, and electromagnetic, however, they are not the option today.

Ultrasonic meters differ from other traditional tools since they use sound waves to measure the liquid flow. They are attached to the inside or outside of a pipe. On activation, it transmits ultrasonic waves - as the name suggests, from one side of the pipe to another.

While an ultrasonic flowmeter is used across various industries, let us see some benefits/applications of using it in the Oil and Gas Industry.

No moving parts to measure pressure

Unlike traditional measurement tools, an ultrasonic meter does not have moving parts. These parts often create issues with the flow of the liquid and may even cause pressure loss. Plus, these parts may degrade over time and need repairing or replacement. Ultrasonic meters do ...
... not have these parts so you do not need to worry about flow obstruction or repairing.

Low maintenance

As mentioned in point 1, ultrasonic meters do not contain moving parts. This simplifies the cleaning process and doesn’t require much interference with removing or repairing any part. Moreover, they last for several years since they consume less power and the batteries also take a few years for a replacement.

Gives accurate results

The traditional measurement tools did not guarantee accurate results as the results also depended on all parts of the tool. If one part breaks down or wears off, it can result into giving an inaccurate measurement result.

While for ultrasonic meters, this is not the case. If they are not properly mounted on the pipe, then it can lead to inaccurate results. All types of ultrasonic meters give accurate results. But, insertion flowmeters are usually more accurate than clamp-on flowmeters.

Digital readouts

Technology has led to the creation of ultrasonic transducers with digital readouts and network connections. If you want transducers to communicate measurements in real-time to a central system, then it is possible too.

Wrapping up

Hopefully, now you know how ultrasonic meters benefit your industry. They not only require minimal maintenance but also are more accurate. It is important to note that although there are different types of ultrasonic flowmeter, they work on the same principle. To know about each of them and then decide which one to go for.
