Things To Know About Child Care First Aid
It's not just the children who need to know what to do in a medical emergency. In fact, it's often the adults who are responsible for keeping a child safe. If you're the parent or carer of a child under 16 years of age, there are some things you should know about child care first aid in Melbourne.
Treating Minor Injuries and Illnesses
If your child has a minor injury or illness that is causing them pain, discomfort or anxiety, you can treat them at home using first aid measures. However, if your child has a serious infection or is unconscious, in severe pain, cannot pass urine and is dehydrated, you should seek medical advice immediately.
Giving Medicine
If your child needs medicine to take away their pain or make them better, make sure you know how to give it to them safely. Medicines for children often come in different forms from those for adults and babies over 6 months old may be given liquid medicines to swallow directly from the spoon. If your ...
... child is vomiting or refusing food and drink, make sure they have enough fluids until they can accept oral medicines again.
You should also keep some over-the-counter medications on hand in case of allergic reactions, insect bites and stings, diarrhoea, headache, fever, insomnia, nausea, rash, vomiting, stomach ache and upset stomach.
Keeping the First Aid Kit Close by
You should have a basic first aid kit that includes:
Bandages with pressure dressing (use these to treat bleeding cuts)
Adhesive bandages (good for covering scrapes and scratches)
Gauze pads (to clean wounds)
Cleansing agent (like rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide; use to clean wounds)
Tweezers (to remove splinters or foreign objects from wounds)
Thermometer (for taking temperature; use rectal thermometers for infants and young children. Never use glass thermometers.)
Cold pack (holds cold against a swollen area; use this on sprains and strains)
Child care first aid is the responsibility of any person who takes care of children. It is the best way to ensure the safety of the children in their care. Child care workers need to be trained in order to carry out their duties effectively and to avoid putting the health and safety of children at risk.
Whether you're looking for a day care centre or you're babysitting a neighbour's kid, it's important to know the basic child care first aid in Melbourne. You never know when you might be the one who has to step in and help someone who's hurt.
