We are living in the age of technology with electrical and electronic devices all around us. These devices are dependent on electrical power for their operation. Today electricity has become a necessity and almost every nation is providing an uninterrupted electrical power supply to their cities and villages. Household or a big factory, electricity has become necessary for its smooth operation.
Transformers are one such passive component that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another circuit. It helps in step-up or step-down the voltage level and provides a steady power supply. Transformers are made of different components and one such important component is transformer oil.

Transformer Oil Benefits

Early transformers are dry and small in size. In 1887 Elihu Thomson patented the use of mineral oil in transformers, with the transformer oil application being to disperse the heat from the core of the transformer and prolong the life of the equipment. Apart from heat transfer, it increases the dielectric strength of the transformer. It is measured that Combined, the paper and oil yield a 23% increase ...
... in dielectric strength. It also helps in protecting the integrity of the solid insulator of the transformer.

Types of Transformer Oil

Earlier mineral oil was used which was good enough but the invention of synthetic oils has increased the durability of the transformer. These synthetic oils have high flash and fire points which provides fire safety and can dissipate high temperatures efficiently thus more compact transformers are possible. Right now, there are two types of synthetic oils are used in transformers.

1)Paraffin based transformer oil

2)Naphtha based transformer oil

Naphtha oil is more easily oxidized than paraffin oil. But the product of oxidation – i.e., sludge – in the naphtha oil is more soluble than the sludge from the paraffin oil. Thus, sludge of naphtha-based oil is not
precipitated in the bottom of the transformer. Hence it does not obstruct
the convection circulation of the oil, which means it does not disturb the transformer cooling system.

Market Prospect

The world is moving towards a clean and green source of energy. Electrical vehicles are replacing conventional petroleum-based vehicles. In the coming future demand for electricity and thus transformers will grow which will become the growth factor for the transformer oil market also.

Recently Canton-based Hydrodec North America has been acquired by a British-based company. Tesla Megapack battery energy storage system goes online in Moss Landing. Many nations are also trying to connect their far villages with electricity so they can also contribute to the growth of the nation especially developing nations that are spending a substantial amount of their budget in this field.

According to market research conducted by Delvens, the global Transformer Oil market size is projected to reach a CAGR of 6.6% from 2022 to 2028. APAC is the most rapidly growing market and offers a huge opportunity for the industry, whose growth is driven by the surged demand for electricity in developing nations.

Conclusion

Electricity demand is increasing and development in this field is very promising which ultimately led to an increase in the demand for transformer oils. Recent developments, acquisitions and mergers by companies have shown transformer oil market potential.
