This is the procedure to extract the infected pulp from the inside of the tooth, fill it with the appropriate substance and seal it. During this procedure, the nerves are also separated from the roots, preventing the teeth from feeling sensation. In fact, root canal treatment is specifically designed to remove bacteria from an infected root canal, prevent reinfection, and preserve the original tooth.

Why is root canal treatment needed?

When the pulp is infected, the infection can spread through the root canal system of the tooth. As a result, an abscess may form. An abscess is a swollen area around the teeth caused by an inflamed area where pus collects. Tooth abscesses can cause severe discomfort from dull pain and can cause tooth pain when chewed. Without root canal treatment, the infection may spread and tooth extraction may be required.

Before we can fully understand what root canal treatment is and why it is needed, we first need to understand the various elements that make up the structure of the tooth.

Enamel: The ...
... hard covering over the top of the teeth is called enamel. Enamel is very hard and dense and helps protect dentin and pulp from the outside world.

Dentine: Dentin is the lower layer of enamel that makes up the majority of the tooth structure.

Pulp: The nerve and blood supply is in the pulp, which is in the center or inside of the tooth. Note: A root canal is a tunnel that extends from the pulp to the root.

Does root canal treatment hurt?
no. Local anesthetics are usually given. The procedure should feel the same as doing the filling. There may be some tenderness after the procedure, but this should disappear over time.

How do I avoid a root canal?
Good dental hygiene helps avoid root canal treatment. Regular dental examinations make sure your dentist is in a good position to detect concerns that you may not be aware of. They look for deterioration and cracks in existing padding and crowns. Addressing the problem early can avoid infections and other consequences that can lead to endodontic treatment.

One of the most common causes of root canal infections is tooth decay. Regular brushing and dental flossing, chewing sugar-free gums between meals and reducing the number of effervescent drinks and sugar in your diet all help prevent tooth decay.

Steps of a root canal procedure

Area preparation
The dentist first paralyzes the area. The paralyzing chemicals are injected into the gums and roots of the teeth using injections. After the area is paralyzed, the dentist then puts the dental dam in his mouth. Covering the remaining teeth in the mouth isolates the teeth that require a root canal.

Reach the roots and purify them
The dentist then drills a hole in the tooth to access the root canal and pulp cavity. The pulp cavity and root canal are cleaned by the dentist with an instrument. The canal is cleaned and disinfected with antibacterial and antiseptic solutions. It kills bacteria while treating canal infections.

The canal is shaped
The root canal should be filled by the dentist. The canal must first be shaped. The dentist shapes the canal with a small device so that it is ready to accept the filler. The canal is washed again after it is formed.

Filling the canals
The dentist fills the canal with gutta-percha. This rubbery substance is inserted into the canal and then heated. It is compressed by the dentist to fit snugly against the wall. To further seal the canal, the dentist applies sticky cement. Bacteria are kept away from properly sealed canals.

Fill the holes for access
The holes formed to access the canal must also be sealed by the dentist. Because it is packed, bacteria do not invade your teeth. To reinforce the teeth, the dentist may need to insert stanchions into the canal. If your teeth are severely damaged and cannot support restoration on their own, this is the only option.

Healing and antibiotics
Antibiotic prescriptions are written by the dentist and sent home with the patient. The treatment eliminates the remaining infections. Patients are also given advice for aftercare. It is common to feel a little pain for a few days after treatment. Discomfort is usually relieved by over-the-counter painkillers.

Adding the crown
If the root canal is in the posterior tooth, or if the tooth is significantly damaged, the patient should return to the crown. The crown strengthens and stabilizes by surrounding the treated tooth. Permanent crowns are custom-made to fit the patient's natural teeth. Your teeth can now withstand the stress of biting again.
