In its early days, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) was a little-known event with just a handful of participants. The idea was solid, however, and it was only a matter of time before it caught on. Each year, more and more people heard about the tournament and wanted to participate. The 1979 World Series of Poker marked the first time that over 50 people played in the main event.

The tournament featured many notable players from the day including Jesse Alto, Amarillo Slim Preston, Aubrey Day, Bobby Baldwin, Buc Buchanan, Betty Carey, Barbara Freer, Brian "Sailor" Roberts, Chip Reese, Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson, Gabe Kaplan, Sam Moon, Dewey Tomko, Ken Smith, Sam Petrillo and Walter Pearson.

The big winners from the preliminary rounds were Bobby Baldwin and Perry Green. Baldwin won the $10,000 Deuce to Seven Draw, which paid out $90,000 (the biggest cash prize of the preliminary tournaments). Green picked up the second biggest prize of the preliminary tournaments, winning the $1,500 No Limit Hold'em for a cash prize of $76,500.

Some of the other winners from the preliminary rounds were Gary Berland ...
... and Lakewood Louie. Berland won both the $500 Seven Card Stud and the $1,000 Seven Card Stud Split tournaments, earning him a total of $44,000. Lakewood Louie won both the $1,000 Ace to Five Draw and the $2,000 Draw High, winning him a combined $45,000.

Poker legend Johnny Moss proved yet again that he couldn't be counted out. The aging star won the prestigious $5,000 Seven Card Stud, which won him $48,000.

There were 54 entrants to the Main Event in 1979. By the end of the first day, there were 34 left, with many of the big names bowing out early.

Doyle Brunson had previously won the Main Event in both 1976 and 1977. His luck ran out in 1978, however, and he was eliminated early. He didn't fare any better this year, going out on the first day. His friends Amarillo Slim and Brian Sailor Roberts also went out early. Barbara Freer, the first woman to participate in the Main Event, was also ousted on the first day.

On the second day, twenty more players were eliminated from the Main Event. Puggy Pearson, who had won the tournament in 1973, was the biggest name of the people who went out on Day 2. Ken Smith, who made the final table in 1978, was also unable to make it through the day.

Bobby Baldwin was the first of the big-name players to exit on the third day. A short while later, Sam Petrillo and Chip Reese followed went out. When Reese exited the game there were just five players left to contend for the title.

The last five players were Johnny Moss, Sam Moon, George Huber, Bobby Hoff, and Hal Fowler. Moss went out first and was followed by Moon and Huber shortly thereafter. That left Hoff and Fowler to fight for the $270,000 first place cash prize.
Fowler immediately became the aggressor and attempted to close the game quickly. Hoff eventually went all in with a $43,000 bet which Fowler subsequently called. He won the hand with an inside straight to become the 1979 WSOP champion. He was the first amateur to ever win the tournament.
