Most people have their wisdom teeth removed at one point in their lives. Wisdom tooth extraction is when one or more of your four wisdom teeth are removed. Most dentists will recommend wisdom tooth extraction, even with healthy teeth and there are many reasons behind this. Even wisdom teeth that are not showing symptoms could harbour disease. There is usually not enough space for the tooth to push through the skin, which makes it harder to clean.

The good news is that wisdom tooth extractions do not have long-term complications, though the removal of impacted wisdom teeth often requires surgical procedures, which means cutting the gum and removing bone. You may be offered one of three anesthetics, based on how serious the wisdom tooth extraction is, along with what makes you more comfortable.

Once the area is numb, or you are sedated, the dentist makes an incision in the gum to expose the tooth and bone, removing the bone to access the root of the tooth, the tooth is then removed, the area is cleaned and stitched. It is a common procedure that is safe, as long as you follow the post-operative guidelines provided by your dentist or oral surgeon.
