Most people have their wisdom teeth removed at one point in their lives. Wisdom tooth extraction is when one or more of your four wisdom teeth are removed. These are four permanent adult teeth that are located at the back corners of your mouth, on both the lower and upper jaw. When the wisdom tooth does not have room to grow, it becomes impacted, causing infection, pain, and other dental issues.

Wisdom tooth extraction is done by the dentist or an oral surgeon. There are several reasons why the dentist may recommend you have these teeth removed, they may be erupted or impacted. Wisdom teeth are known as third molars and are the last of your permanent teeth to show in the mouth. They usually only push through the gum when you are between seventeen and twenty-five years of age. Some people may never develop wisdom teeth at all. Some may have theirs grow completely normally, causing no problems.

Other people experience pain and discomfort, which is due to the wisdom teeth being impacted, this is when there isn't enough room in the mouth for them to grow or develop normally. Impacted teeth may only push through the ...
... skin slightly, or they may not grow at all. It's not uncommon for them to grow at an angle towards the next tooth, or grow towards the back of the mouth. Some grow straight up, the same as your other teeth, staying trapped in the jaw bone.

Some of the symptoms associated with impacted wisdom teeth include pain, infection or gum disease, food and debris being stuck behind the tooth, tooth decay, damage to nearby teeth and bone, cyst formation, complications when straightening the other teeth through orthodontic treatment.

Most dentists will recommend wisdom tooth extraction, even with healthy teeth and there are many reasons behind this. Even wisdom teeth that are not showing symptoms could harbour disease. There is usually not enough space for the tooth to push through the skin, which makes it harder to clean.

The good news is that wisdom tooth extractions do not have long-term complications, though the removal of impacted wisdom teeth often requires surgical procedures, which means cutting the gum and removing bone. The complications that could occur, which are very rare, include a painful and dry socket, socket infection, damage to nearby jawbone, sinuses, teeth, and nerves.

Depending on the severity of the impaction, the dentist may offer to perform the procedure in the dentist's chair, but if it is a bad impaction, it may need a surgical approach. Your dentist will advise you accordingly and if needed, recommend an oral surgeon. The area is numbed using a local anesthetic, sometimes sedation is offered.

The good news is that wisdom tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day to recover. The dentist or hospital will provide instructions on what to do before surgery. You may be offered one of three anesthetics, based on how serious the wisdom tooth extraction is, along with what makes you more comfortable.

Once the area is numb, or you are sedated, the dentist makes an incision in the gum to expose the tooth and bone, removing the bone to access the root of the tooth, the tooth is then removed, the area is cleaned and stitched. It is a common procedure that is safe, as long as you follow the post-operative guidelines provided by your dentist or oral surgeon.
