Comparison Of Digital Pathology & Conventional Microscopy
Digital Pathology:
Digital pathology incorporates the acquisition, management, sharing and interpretation of pathology information — including slides and data — in a digital environment.
Advantages of Digital Pathology:
• It aims at assisting pathologists to provide better patient care.
• No need for extra equipment apart from digital scanner
• Prevents delay in critical patient care
• Pathologists can simultaneously communicate with others using Telepathology while analyzing slides
• Remote consultation & education
• Improved Analysis
• Cost effective shipping and prevents breakage of slides
• Driving workflow efficiency
• Achieving deeper insight into laboratory operations and trends
• Improving quality control and assurance
• Reduced errors
• Eliminates Breakage
• Providing access to a broader range of expertise
• Improving pathologist satisfaction
Conventional Microscopy:
The ...
... conventional microscope uses visible light (400-700 nanometers) to illuminate and produce a magnified image of a sample. This fluorescent species in turn emits a lower energy light of a longer wavelength that produces the magnified image instead of the original light source.
Limitations Of Conventional Microscopy:
• Since the microscope uses visible light and visible light has a set range of wavelengths. The microscope can't produce the image of an object that is smaller than the length of the light wave. Any object that's less than half the wavelength of the microscope's illumination source is not visible under that microscope.
• Resolution limit of optical microscopes
• Low magnification
• Poor surface view
