If your eyes are burning and feeling itchy most of the time, you most likely have a condition known as 'dry eye.' Dry eyes can be caused by a variety of circumstances, including prolonged exposure to digital screens, air pollution, and other health complications. Dry eye can also be exceedingly uncomfortable and even painful for some people, so it is best to see an eye specialist or an ocular surgeon as soon as possible for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
What exactly is dry eye condition?
Dry eye is a chronic eye condition in which the eyes do not generate enough tears or moisture to keep the eyes nourished. Tears provide oxygen to the eyes and are required to clean the eyes and lower the risk of eye infections. Many people also often confuse dry eye with eye infections or allergies, ignoring the symptoms until they worsen.
What are the other possible causes of dry eye?
As already stated, there can be a variety of causes, and dry eye is often seen in persons who wear contact lenses for longer periods than their optometrist has suggested. You can also experience temporary dry eyes in rooms with air ...
... conditioning, or certain weather conditions, and cigarette smoke is a huge contributing factor.
Some prescription medications might also cause dry eyes, not to mention hormonal changes and dietary issues. However, meibomian gland dysfunction is regarded as one of the most common reasons for persistent dry eye, but a qualified eye doctor must examine your eyes and make an accurate diagnosis before you start any treatment.
Dry eye is common during the winter and affects both visual acuity and eye comfort. It causes itchy, unpleasant eyes by changing the quantity and composition (quality) of the tear layer. The tear layer is made up of three layers, each of which serves a different purpose in terms of keeping the ocular surface stable. These three layers are the exterior lipid layer, the middle aqueous layer, and the inner mucus layer. Dry eyes, also known as Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca, can result from a change in the integrity of one of these layers.
Can dry eye be effectively treated?
LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment is undoubtedly the most revolutionary treatment available today. LipiFlow® is an FDA-approved medication for Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which is thought to be the major cause of dry eyes in many cases. LipiFlow® treatment is aimed at curing Meibomian gland dysfunction, and the treatment involves a specialised technique of warming and massaging the inside of the eyelids, to restore healthy oil production and tear quality.
Before beginning LipiFlow treatment, anaesthetic drops are first applied to each eye, and once they are completely numb, the eye doctor will place the LipiFlow® sterile, single-use activators under and over your eyelids without any actual contact with the surface of the eye.
The treatment takes less than 15 minutes after the activators are in place. For the first two minutes, the activators apply consistent pressure as they warm to a temperature that begins to dissolve obstructions in the gland. During the next ten minutes, the activators alternate between different levels of pressure, delivering a massage action that initiates the natural oil flow of the eye.
Following LipiFlow® treatment, normal oil production is resumed by the Meibomian glands, which is required to maintain high-quality tears. These oils are not only increasing the general health of the eye's surface but also prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. Furthermore, reducing the symptoms of dry eye can increase visual clarity in some individuals. It normally takes six to eight weeks to notice the best results, but the good news is it can last for up to a year after treatment.
In conclusion: there is normally no downtime after Lipiflow treatment, simply because it is not a complicated surgical procedure, and patients can arrange to have this treatment during their lunchtime so that they do not have to spend unnecessary time away from work.
