With the world getting noisier from living near the neighbors, phones ringing, televisions, running, top quality speakers and so on; sound isolation has become more vital than ever.

Living in a space without proper isolation creates extra stress and may cause health problems from lack of quality sleep. Moreover, with the growing number of employees working from home, it is vital that a well isolated space is available. Here is an overview of the basic concepts of sound isolation.

Sound isolation involves six fundamental principles, including conduction, resonance, absorption, mass, damping, and decoupling. Taking all these principles into consideration will enhance the performance of your sound isolation control products.

Conduction

This sound principle is frequently addressed to as flanking. Essentially, vibrations from sound transmitting through the conductive materials into other conductive materials like sheet metal, plumbing pipes and wood framing. This type of sound transmission is indirect, but can be substantial. You can ...
... break the transmission of sound through conduction by either decoupling the materials or damping the materials. Both these approaches can be achieved by various products for law enforcement soundproofing.

Resonance

Problems with resonance are most frequently created while trying to decouple or while using the same type of material in multiple layers. Resolving resonance problems while decoupling is easy. Just avoid more than a single air space in any assembly and insulate that single air space with the right amount of insulation. We suggest just a single air space per wall or ceiling activity in any sound assembly.

Absorption

Insulation is the material of choice for meeting the absorption necessities of a floor, ceiling or wall. Just the size of the insulation is vital and not the insulation type.

Mass

Sound is transferred through vibration. With this, a heavier partition is harder to vibrate while a light weight partition is simple to vibrate. Minimal surge in mass won’t lead to substantial gains in isolation. If your wall has a drywall layer on each side, then you will have to add a couple of more layers on either side to enhance the isolation by five STC points.

Damping

Many things can be dampened, including isolation boxes, doors, sheet metal, pipes, floors, ceilings and almost anything with low mass and will vibrate from sound transfer.

Decoupling

The primary definition of decouple is to segregate objects. There are different ways to decouple a ceiling or a wall. Sound transfers through vibrations, and if two materials are not touching or have minimal contact, then sound transmission will be seriously lessened and noise control for commercial premises is possible.

Decoupling will always be the best way to isolate both ceilings and walls from the lowest to highest frequencies. Decoupling is also the secret way to isolate impact footfall isolation in ceilings for noise control for hospitals.
