York is a historic walled city established by the Romans. Rich in history, here are a few of the things to see and do in York.

York Castle Museum is a good place to start to acquaint yourself with historic York, as it features some 600 years of the history of the city in the form of old shops, prison cells and a recreation of a Victorian cobbled street.

The Jorvik Viking Centre is popular with children, and also features historic recreations ? in this case, the recreation of an entire Viking settlement. The museum was built on the site where the ruins of the city of Jorvik were discovered after a factory was demolished, and many of these original artefacts are on display.

The National Railway Museum is the world''s largest railway museum, featuring exhibits from both past and present ? including the Japanese Bullet Train. Entry is free charge.

The Richard the Third Museum is located within the walls of the city, at the Monk Bar gatehouse. As well as the life of Richard the Third, the museum features a working portcullis and medieval execution chamber.

The Shambles is an extremely well preserved ...
... medieval street, narrow and crammed with shops ? well worth a stroll for the atmospherics.

York Minster Cathedral is a must see for the religious and non religious alike, as the 800 year old building is a classic example of the grandeur of Gothic architecture.

A popular modern attraction is the Yorkshire Wheel, which at 60m in height affords great views of the city and surrounding countryside. There are plenty of accommodation options in York; I found York Hotels online at sites like Octopus Travel. #Pen Name is a keen amateur historian and the author of this article about the historic attractions of York. Bonny Kominek recommends checking out Octopus Travel when looking for York hotels.
