Wireless Spectrum And Its Importance Around Us
Most of today’s communication is wireless and it travels over the air through radio frequency which is known as spectrum. Your mobile device such a smartphone, where you connect to the network wireless uses wireless spectrum wherein it passes through airwaves to transmit data.
Imagine a radio, when you turn it on, it catches signal from different station depending on what you would like to listen to. There will be no two station that can transmit the same spectrum at the same for it will create an interference. Also, through the wireless spectrum, it can only broadcast frequencies within a particular distance.
Spectrum is very significant in our industries. Most people are now into technology and almost everyone now has smartphone and mobile devices. All of it needs higher amount of data which also requires higher spectrum. As we all know that billions of people are accessing internet, it gives a greater demand for greater frequency, in addition, this wireless spectrum is just a portion of electromagnetic spectrum called radio frequency spectrum (RF spectrum).
Spectrum is natural ...
... resource, and it is owned by the government. That is why most radio spectrum from television and radio broadcast needs to have licensed from the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). On the other hand, we are currently using higher amount of radio frequency also called as millimeter wave frequencies. 4G and 5G technology that we now have, is operated by mid-band spectrum which gives a good and reliable source of coverage. With its increasing demand, FCC is pushed to release higher amount of millimeter wave frequencies to meet the requirements of most telco and wireless communication industries.
Categories of Wireless Spectrum
1. Low-band spectrum – this is under 3GHz, wireless industries used this to build a high-speed wireless network
2. High-band spectrum – above 24GHz that travel shorter distance and offers high capacity and ultra-fast speed
3. Mid-band Spectrum – between 3GHz and 24GHz this blends in between that provides medium coverage and capacity.
Advantages of wireless spectrum
a. Increase profit
b. Speed up Deployment
c. Cost efficient
d. Quality control
e. Competitive advantage
With the continuous improvement and evolution of technology, telco companies seek its way to ensure that they will cater the increasing demand for a higher connectivity. A switch from simple cellphone to smartphones and tablets gives an increase requirement for wireless spectrum.
