Facebook doesn't use PHP for their core system, Facebook uses C++ on the backend system. It's not actually the original PHP, Facebook wrote an alternate version of PHP, e.g. HipHop's PHP, which helps convert PHP code to C++, showing that FB doesn't use PHP, but uses a modified version of PHP.

Facebook uses React on the client side in a browser. As soon as a page is submitted to your browser, React steps in. It renders components, listens for events and makes API calls to the server to get more data.

According to the story detailed on the Facebook Wikipedia page, Zuckerberg wrote the original code for Facebook in October 2003.

Consider what other web technologies could be considered and whether they existed in 2003:

Ruby existed, but not yet Rails
Java 1.4 with JSF 1.x or Spring 1.0.
Perl 5.8 but no Catalyst framework
Python existed but not Django framework

The term Ajax for web programming was coined in 2005, but the use of asynchronous XML requests was not yet standardized, it was too early to be used with broad browser support.

The thing is, Facebook's choice of PHP was perfectly reasonable at the time it was created.

The reason Facebook didn't migrate from PHP is that Facebook engineers were able to fix many of its bugs through a combination of fixes at all stack levels and excellent internal discipline through the convention and style of the PHP script. The worst attributes of the language have been avoided and the coding style has been rigorously enforced through a fairly strict code review culture.
