Lab grown diamonds revolutionized the jewelry industry. The world no longer needed to depend on steadily depleting mines which are hazardous to the environment. Lab created diamonds are created in a safe, controlled laboratory with sophisticated machinery under the watchful gaze of experts. While the end products are the same, lab diamonds can be categorized on the basis of the processes that create them.

Synthetic Diamonds

Synthetic diamonds have the same chemical and physical properties as naturally occurring diamonds. Carbon atoms are compressed in an environment which is created as a copy of the earth’s interior in which natural diamonds are formed. This is achieved through two famous methods namely: CVD and HPHT.

CVD Lab created diamonds

This process was first tried by William G. Eversole in the 1950s. It went through several alterations and was finally turned into an operational and commercially feasible process by the experts at the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials in Japan.

... Vapour Deposition is a low pressure technique. Due to the principle of thermodynamic instability, a low pressure process to create diamonds was initially thought to be impossible. But it isn’t. A diamond ‘seed’ is placed in a CVD reactor where it interacts with hydrogen and methane gas at very low pressure.

Once the temperature becomes extremely high, ionized plasma breaks up particles of the gasses. As a result, pure carbon atoms bond and crystallize over the seed. The CVD process can control inclusions better than the high-pressure -high temperature method. Therefore, fancy color lab created diamonds are usually created using the CVD method.
