Adding a pond to your garden lets you maximise your outdoor space. It adds function — and it makes your property even more beautiful. However, with the addition of a pond to your home comes another responsibility: keeping it safe, especially for kids. This is where Pond safety nets become truly essential.

By The Numbers

Kids are naturally drawn to water. Only behind birth defects, drowning is a rampant cause of death among children who are 1 to 4 years old.

Did you know that every year, about 350 children under the age of 5 drown in pools? Back in the ‘60s, there was a report that about 460 children drowned in tubs, buckets, toilets, and even spas.

Every year, there are also around 2,600 children who are rushed to hospital emergency rooms because of a near-drowning incident.

It’s no surprise that youngsters can also get drowned in backyard ponds. This is why the importance of pond safety netting is not to be underestimated.

Tips To Prevent Kids From Pond Drowning

If you don’t want your child or a kid of someone visiting your home to drown in your pond, here are safety ...
... tips that you should know — and follow.

Choose an ideal location for your pond. If you’re just planning to construct a pond in your garden, it’s important to determine the right location. If your space permits, it should be ideally visible from a clear vantage point in your house.

Restrict youngsters from feeding the fish. Prevention is better than cure. This is why, in the first place, you should be strict when it comes to preventing toddlers from doing any activity near the pond. Apart from feeding the fish, you should also restrict them from playing near this water feature.

Add fences and safety nets. Installing pond safety nets and meshes are proven measures to keep children safe from pond drowning. When buying these protective layers, make sure that you choose those with superior quality and durability. Also, it’s recommended to add pond fencing as another layer of protection.

Consider investing in a pool alarm system. You’ll never know just when a kid can accidentally get access to a pond (or any other water feature in your garden). Hence, it’s highly helpful to add pool alarm system that is triggered when is there’s a significant surface wave or water pressure change in your pond.

Always keep the children supervised. This seems basic but many parents overlook this vital task and tend to be complacent when they’re at the comfort of their own properties. Especially if you have a pond or any other installations that will be dangerous for unsupervised kids, you have to be diligent in looking after the young ones.

Educate children. It’s also your responsibility to teach kids about the dos and don’ts in your own household. This includes keeping your pond off-limits to them especially when there’s no adult person around.

Ready a list of emergency hotlines. From adding a pond safety netting to even learning CPR, there are many things that you can do to minimise injuries (or mortality) related to backyard ponds. It also comes in handy if you have a prepared list of contact numbers in case of an emergency like pond drowning.
