How To Improve The Physical Security Of Your Business
Physical security for your business should always be a top priority, and if it isn’t, it could leave you vulnerable to criminal activity. From theft and vandalism, to intrusion and even acts of terrorism, keeping your business safe and protected is about so much more than locks and CCTV systems, and while it can (and should) include a combination of several security measures, it should always include physical security.
How physical security brings peace of mind for everyone
Physical security, such as static or mobile security guards, can go much further towards making your customers, employees and even the general public, feel as safe as they can possibly be when on or near your business premises. There can be no substitute for the physical presence of a person who has been trained to protect you and the property you’re in, and whom has the skill and duty to prevent unlawful activities from taking place there.
Having a security guard to protect your business at times when nobody is there, such as during the night or on public holidays, ...
... can also give you, the business owner, peace of mind that it will be safe even when you’re not there.
What can you do to improve security for your business?
If you’re worried that your business isn’t well enough protected, or are starting a new venture and want to make sure you get security right, from the outset, there are a number of things you should consider and act upon, including, but not limited to, the following:
Instil and enforce basic security procedures
It might sound obvious, but training your employees to lock rooms, windows and buildings appropriately when they leave them, is the very first step any business should take to decreasing the chances of falling victim to a break-in, and if necessary, conduct a security workshop to help everyone understand the risks involved when they don’t follow strict security procedures.
Assess the level of risk
Ideally carried out before you even begin employing anyone to work for you, you need to assess the level of risk the location of your business may present, and determine whether what you’re selling or producing, might make you vulnerable to theft or vandalism.
Select the physical security appropriate to your business
If the level of threat is deemed to be minimal, then hiring a security guard coupled with locks and a CCTV surveillance system, may be sufficient.
If the risk is medium to high, then you should definitely invest in the above security measures, and may want to consider adding a mobile security patrol, too.
A burglar alarm is also always a sound investment, but should only ever be used in conjunction with other physical security measures.
Look also at the building itself, and ask yourself whether the structure is sound and all doors and windows have steel frames to make breaking into them, harder.
If your business means something to you, then its worth protecting, and if it’s worth protecting, it’s worth protecting right. Security guards (armed or unarmed) are a fabulous deterrent for criminals, and when combined with other security measures (such as strong locks and CCTV systems), they can help make your business as secure as it can possibly be.
