The Secret To Good Liver Health With Unani Medicine
It is said that a healthy diet leads to a healthy liver, and a healthy liver leads to a healthy body. The liver is the largest organ in our body and is known as Kabid in Unani medical terminology. Besides helping us digest food, storing energy, and eliminating toxins, it is also responsible for absorbing nutrients and medicines.
The liver produces proteins, regulates cholesterol levels, stores minerals and iron, and destroys old (damaged) red blood cells. The liver also produces bile, which helps digest fats and carries away waste. It consists of four lobes, each with eight sections and thousands of lobules (or small lobes). In this blog post, we will examine the therapeutic principles of Unani medicine in the case of the liver.
#Did you know?
Studies published in 2021 state that fatty liver is one of the leading causes of Liver Cirrhosis, Liver Cell Cancer, etc. The prevalence of liver disease in India ranges from 9% to 53%, with urban areas showing a higher prevalence of liver disease at 53.7% compared to rural areas, which is 30.2%.
Unani Perspective on Liver Health
As per Unani ...
... medicine, the liver is considered an organ for producing body humour. It is endowed with four powers: absorption (quwat-e-jaziba), digestion (quwat-e-ghaziya), retention (quwat-e-masikah) and excretion (quwat-e-dafiya). All these functions are carried out by the liver.
The pathological changes in the liver are due to changes in the body's humour, temperament and accumulation of morbid material (mawad-e-fasida). If any of the four powers of the liver are disturbed, it results in poor liver function, and toxins accumulate in the body. These conditions result in various types of liver disease, such as Jaundice, Hepatitis, Liver Cirrhosis, Fatty Liver etc.
Symptoms of the Liver disease include:
Yellowish skin and eyes (Jaundice).
Abdominal pain and swelling.
Swelling in legs and ankles.
Itchy skin.
Dark urine colour.
Pale stool colour, or bloody or tar-coloured stool.
Chronic fatigue.
Nausea or vomiting.
Loss of appetite.

Saffron (Zafran)
Saffron has hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These properties are extremely useful in treating liver injuries, such as viral hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, and alcohol-induced liver disease.

Cloves (Laung)
Cloves are also known for promoting better liver function. Unani studies have shown that the Eugenol in cloves helps reduce the signs of liver cirrhosis and fatty liver.
Dosage - You can take 2-3 cloves every day or take 1/2 teaspoon of clove powder with water.
Beetroot (Chukandar)
Beetroot contains Vitamin C and fibre, which benefits the liver by performing a natural cleansing function. By purifying the blood, beets help to increase oxygen levels in the body. It also aids in digestion by assisting in breaking down harmful wastes. Moreover, it also boosts enzymatic activity and increases bile flow.
Dosage - Take 1 teaspoon of beetroot powder once a day. You can also have ½ -1 fresh beet in Salad daily.
Tamarind (Imli)
There has been an increase in the number of fatty liver and damaged liver cases due to alcohol consumption. In these conditions, tamarind powder is beneficial because it contains antioxidants. The antioxidants found in tamarind are called procyanidins, which protect the liver from damage.
Dosage - Take 1/2 teaspoon of Tamarind powder once a day with plain water, or chew 1-2 pieces of tamarind.
Turmeric
For centuries, turmeric has been used in India as a spice and medicinal herb. Turmeric contains the active ingredient curcumin, which has powerful biological properties. This spice helps the enzymes that flush out toxins and contains antioxidants that repair liver cells. Additionally, it boosts bile production while detoxifying metals from the liver.
Dosage - 1/4th teaspoon with lukewarm milk at bedtime.
Garlic
Garlic is loaded with Sulphur, which activates liver enzymes that help your body to flush out toxins. It also contains high amounts of selenium, an essential micronutrient that helps to boost the natural antioxidant enzyme levels in the liver.
Dosage - Add 1/2 teaspoon dried garlic powder to water each day or take 1-2 garlic cloves.
Nutmeg (Jaiphal)
Jaiphal is believed to purify the liver and kidneys and eliminate or remove toxins from the system. It contains a high amount of Myrislignan, which can help treat liver disorders and injuries. In addition, according to the Unani System, Jaiphal treats hepatitis.
Dosage - Take 1/2 teaspoon of Nutmeg seed powder with lukewarm water just before breakfast.
Preventive Measures for Liver Cirrhotic Patients
Liver disease patients must completely avoid alcohol. In cirrhotic patients, alcohol accelerates liver failure and hastens death.
Through juice therapy, the liver can get rid of toxins from the body. People with liver disease should mix one part of pure juice (beetroot juice, orange, cucumber juice) with one part of water before drinking.
People dealing with liver disease are strongly recommended to eat smaller meals. Five or six smaller, lighter meals per day will help avoid overworking the liver.
Avoid fatty and processed foods, especially foods prepared with animal fats or hydrogenated oils. These types of foods put an additional load on the liver.
People suffering from liver disease are advised to eat only lean proteins (containing no fats) in limited amounts.
Increase consumption of fruits (apple, papaya, grapes) and steamed vegetables (tomatoes, spinach, carrot, broccoli) as they are easy to digest, and thus less work for the liver. In addition, they are good sources of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that aid the liver in detoxification and healing.
