To keep cheap travel cheap, particularly cheap airplane tickets, travelers are financially incentivized (by way of baggage fees) these days to pack as efficiently as possible. The New York Times recently interviewed several pilots and flight attendants and came up with a series of packing suggestions.

The following are packing techniques employed by professional flight crews:

To save room, many flight attendants roll their clothes instead of folding them.
Avoid wearing heavy coats even in the winter. Thermal tee shirts and long underwear, along with a sweater, fleece and/or a lined windbreaker will often keep you warm.

Many professional travelers carry only one pair of shoes, the ones on their feet.

Wear a blazer or suit that you will need at your destination. Selecting garments that travel well, such as a 50-50 percent cotton-polyester blend combo, is wise.

Female flight attendants carry color coordinated separates that can go together in a variety of ways. Small accessories, like scarves, can give the same outfit a very different look.

Bring laundry soap and select shirts and underwear that can be washed at hotels.
