Hunters and shooters, their instructors, members of law enforcement, the military, and a host of other individuals and groups whose ears are often exposed to the effects of loud gun and rifle fire, have so many more options today than in the past.

Technology in all spheres develops at a great pace all the time to ensure new worlds are opened up to us. Technology has always made its contribution to the world of shooting. Many decades ago hunters and shooters had to be content with, maybe, wearing some kind of self-made plug to protect their ears from the effects of loud sounds around them. But fortunately advancing technology and new introductions always ensure that solutions are never far away.

Earplugs and earmuffs have been around a while, and they are constantly looked at to see how they can be improved upon. These days advanced technology makes it possible to wear sophisticated electronic hearing protection, and the good news is that this technology is no longer unaffordable for many.

The earlier foam earplugs – which blocked out all sound, meaning that to hear any sound at all you had to remove ...
... them – were replaced by other options, such as earmuffs which, with time, also became available in electronic form. Of course, the standard muffs (non-electronic) are quite effective as they block out harsh sound and help to protect shooters’ hearing. But the downside is that it blocks out virtually all sound, which means you do not hear your mates talking or discussing things, or you are not able to listen to the instructor when they communicate information.

However, earmuffs with electronic ability change things. These have microphones on the outside to process sound so the user receives this sound electronically. You can control the volume to make sure it is set at an acceptable level. They work based on the muff sensing sounds and shutting off those at too high a decibel level. When the sound is no longer heard (such as the gunshot) the amplifier turns back on and lets you listen to normal sounds (those at acceptable levels to the ear) once more.

Of course, as technology develops, so does amplifier technology, which makes it possible for users of such technology to hear sound at lower than gunfire decibel; you can also listen to the conversation, sounds of nature, your prey moving in the bush, all because loud sounds are compressed into a much lower volume level.

But, as is the case with most everything, there may always be some drawbacks. If it is not price or availability, it may be an issue such as that the muffs may be cumbersome and not always easy to handle, or you may have to move them when you aim before you pull the trigger. This is not ideal. This is where the use of electronic earplugs for shooting – and other purposes where loud sound can be a problem – offers an advanced option.

These earplugs offer the same quality protection as the muffs such as high-quality adjustable microphones and all other features to reduce the harsh noise your ears are exposed to when you shoot, be that at the range, in the bush as you stalk buck, or when you are on your outing finding upland game birds.

Technology develops fast, and the recent hearing protection devices certainly have made life easier for hunters and shooters. These electronic earplugs you wear in the ears are favored by many shooters these days as they are less cumbersome than muffs, you do not have to worry about carrying them, or losing them when you rest somewhere, and you do not have to think about packing them with your firearm.

They are small and easily stay in your ears till you get home after the hunt. Electronic earplugs for shooters are certainly making their mark and can be bought from specialist providers and suppliers these days, all over America and elsewhere.
