While the wider public might be aware of when it is Ramadan, there is still a very large part of the population who are unsure of what this celebration entails or what it is about. Sharing information regarding the religious period for all Muslims became a matter of much greater importance due to the widespread presence of Muslims in countries all over the world. Understanding different religions make multi-culturalism a process that can run its course as there would be far greater understanding and appreciation for those whose religion is different from your own. Ramadan is an extremely sacred time to all followers of Islam and it is a time to reflect on your devotion to your religion.

Ramadan is the most important month in the Islamic calendar. The purpose of this month and its celebration is to remind the followers of the religion about the month when the Prophet Muhammed had his first revelation of the Qur’an or the Muslim holy book.

While celebrations mostly go along with festivities and an abundance of food, for Muslims, the month is a time of fasting. During Ramadan, Muslims may not eat anything between ...
... sunrise and sunset. This rule is only for adults though and children may eat until they reach puberty. From then onwards they too have to adhere to the fasting rule. This is normally from the age of 14 onwards. Another situation that will allow Muslims to eat is when they are traveling long distances. However, if this was the case, you must take additional fasting days after Ramadan to make up for the lost fasting days.

The Islamic calendar changes according to the cycles of the moon and Ramadan takes place every year in the ninth month of this calendar. However, it is around March or April according to the Western calendar.

The purpose of fasting during this month is to ensure that Muslims are much more focused on the needs of others and how hunger and poverty impact millions of people across the globe. It is a time to immerse yourself in your faith. During the month, Muslims may have only two meals. The first meal of the day is called Suhoor and this they may have just before the sun rises for the day. Then they are only allowed to eat again once the sun has set. This meal they refer to as Iftar. These meals would often constitute as far more than a mere quick bite that you would have on your own as it is also a time spent with family and friends.

During the month, Muslims would also give up on any bad habits they may have and would rather focus their attention and time on doing good deeds and spending time with loved ones. They would also go to a lot of effort to help those who are in need and reach out to the poor.

As it is a time of religious devotion, the men would often spend longer periods at the mosque and the aim is to read the whole Qur’an during the month. The entire period centers on deprivation, religious focus, and humbling yourself to help others.

After the month is over, large groups would gather to celebrate Eid ul Fitr. This is a festivity during which the achievements during the month of Ramadan can be celebrated. It is the festival of breaking the fast and all thank Allah for granting them the strength to endure the challenges they had to face during the month of fasting. As this is a feast, it is a time to wear new clothes, enjoy great food, and give your friends and family gifts. It is also a month during which the team at Lila and Tiny is extremely busy to ensure that every gift in-store will serve as a symbol of love during this time of celebration.
