Cannabigerol (CBG) is commonly called the "mother of all cannabinoids" because its acidic form (CBGA) forms new cannabinoids as it matures. CBG is known for its restorative and rejuvenating effects, and research has shown that CBG works to fight inflammation, pain, and nausea in the body as well as slows the proliferation of cancer cells.

CBG is found in much smaller amounts in cannabis plants (around 1%) than other well-known cannabinoids like CBD and THC. This makes products derived from CBG less common and often more expensive. But as research continues into the therapeutic benefits of this cannabinoid, CBG is rising in popularity.

How Do CBD & CBG Work In The Body?

CBD and CBG are both non-psychoactive (meaning they won’t get you high), and the two cannabinoids share many similar characteristics. The main difference between CBD and CBG is how they interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex nerve cell signaling system that works together with cannabinoids found in cannabis to achieve and maintain homeostasis and promote optimal health. The ECS balances many critical ...
... biological processes related to mood, sleep, memory, appetite, and immune response.

While scientists are still working to understand the ECS fully, we know that the ECS is made up of different cannabinoid receptors found throughout the body: CB1 receptors, located in the nervous system and brain; and CB2 receptors, found in the immune system. Studies suggest that CBD interacts indirectly with CB2 receptors, while CBG binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors and is thought to strengthen the function of anandamide. Anandamide, the “bliss molecule,” plays a role in enhancing pleasure and motivation, regulating appetite and sleep, and alleviating pain.

What Uses Does CBG Have?

According to studies, CBG has various antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer applications. In studies conducted on rats, CBG reduced inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease1 and growth rates of cancer cells and other tumors2.

Other research suggested that CBG’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties may help treat glaucoma, bladder dysfunctions, Huntington’s Disease, and bacterial infections.

While these preliminary findings are encouraging, more research is needed to fully understand the practical applications of CBG on the human body.

Because CBG is present in cannabis in such small quantities, it requires an incredible amount of hemp biomass to extract usable amounts of CBG. Therefore, CBG’s primary function right now is as a complementary cannabinoid to CBD. It is often found in combination with CBD in full spectrum hemp products. Farmers have also begun growing high-CBG strains of smokable hemp.
