Always Leave A Rented Property In The Same Condition You Found It When You Moved In

Nothing could be worse than having to move into a dirty rented house, apartment, or office space. That is often the reason landlords and letting agents require a deposit upfront before they hand you the keys, such deposit to be returned to you when your lease to rent expires at the end of your tenancy – on the understanding that you hand them the rented property in the same condition you found it when you moved in.

Of course, reasonable wear and tear is to be expected and will not negatively impact such a deposit. It is normal practice everywhere that tenants sign a contract with owners or their agents to give an undertaking that they will leave the house, apartment, or other premises in the same clean condition it was handed to them. Therefore every tenant would be well advised to heed certain cleaning requirements lest they are willing to run the risk of losing their deposit – or part thereof for non-compliance of their agreement with the landlord or his/her/their agent.

Most landlords and letting agents work according to a checklist that has to be considered for a leased property to be considered “clean” ...
... and, therefore, acceptable – and the current tenant’s deposit to be returned. Firstly, a quick spring clean is not the answer. Be careful to simply leave your domestic cleaner behind as you load boxes and furniture to move to your new home and think the cleaner will do a job acceptable to the landlord/agent. Your domestic will do what she normally does, which is NOT a deep clean of every corner of the apartment or house. This is where the services of a professional cleaning company become invaluable.

Big cities such as London, Manchester, Cardiff, and even much smaller ones, all have professional cleaning services that will ensure you leave the property in perfect condition for the landlord/agent and the next tenant – so you can claim back your initial deposit. You have choices in the bigger centers. Therefore it is always good to compare rates and prices and to find out what exactly is included. Does the quote include, for example, cleaning of everything such as carpets? Does it include deep oven cleaning? These are issues that come up from time to time and should be considered by tenants when they plan to employ a cleaning services company.

Make sure beforehand that you know what you are paying for. Think of issues such as, say, walls to be washed down, cupboards to be wiped out, banisters, and skirtings that need to be spotless. What about finger marks on light switches, or dusty blinds? These are examples of those issues you will have to pay attention to when you vacate. A professional company has a checklist, and in no time they attend to those issues tenants may not always think about when they pack up.

When it comes to carpets, for example, it is mentioned that no landlord will accept a property with ditty and/or stained carpets. Therefore you have to call in the professionals. Some cleaning services offer a wide range of services, right from cleaning windows, every corner in your bathroom and kitchen – and carpets as well. These companies are normally those with great experience, and they deal with landlords and agents all the time; therefore they know what to expect and include carpet cleaning in their contracts.

All of the above is important and needs to be considered when you vacate. Doing everything yourself may become stressful – consider calling in a professional cleaning service to take care of your end-of-tenancy cleaning responsibilities.
