Identity Theft Insurance
Identity Theft is becoming increasingly common. Many of us have either been affected by it ourselves or someone we know has been affected by it. A common question many people have is, how does it happen? Well, thieves are leveraging technology to quickly and easily access personal information. Also, people aren't as careful as they should be, and provide too much of their personal information to those who will take advantage of it.
Many of us find ourselves believing the cliché. That won't happen to me. Well I'm sure the other 9 million people who were robbed of their identity thought so too. That's right. Last year the Justice Department estimated that over 9 million individuals were robbed of their identity. While there are better odds of winning the jackpot, this is a chance none of us want to take.
Most cases of identity theft involve a stolen credit card number. Others can be more serious such as taking your whole identity. This can involve anything from opening a bank account to buying a car in your name. The important ...
... thing is to prevent it from happening. How much damage is done can depend on how soon you catch it.
Identity theft protection is available for those who'd like further protection. Many people will happily pay a few bucks a month to keep their personal information and credit history safer. Most policies enable you to be more in control of your credit while keeping it safe.
So how do you prevent your identity from being stolen in the first place? Be careful when you are purchasing items online. Make sure the sites you buy from use encryption to protection your payment information. Also check to make sure they are legitimate.
The Federal Trade Commission says that the average victim of identity theft can spend at least $1,500 trying to solve the issue. In this kind of recession many of us are trying to find ways to keep our money safe, this is why identity theft protection is vital!
A big problem is dealing with credit cards. If you have your identity stolen via credit card it's always more of a hassle. The reason is because creditors don't want to deal with you no matter what you claim. All the creditors want is money and they can be hard to deal with on bogus charges.
So what's the first step in finding out if you're protected? Check your homeowner's policy you may be already covered! Also many credit cards have built in identity theft protection for you using their card. Other credit cards will let you know when unusual purchases have been made on your card or account.
Whether you use an identity theft protection service, or have identity theft insurance, the point is to be careful.
