Trans resveratrol is a chemical compound found in plants, which is produced when pathogens such as bacteria or fungi attack them. In other words, trans resveratrol is to some plants as white blood cells are to humans. Taken from the Japanese knotweed, trans resveratrol can also be found in grapes and skins of grapes that produce wine, raspberries, mulberries, blueberries cranberries, peanuts, and in certain types of pine.
In grapes, trans resveratrol is found primarily in the skin. In the case of muscadine grapes, trans resveratrol is also present in the seeds. The amount of trans resveratrol found in grape skins also varies with the grape cultivar, its geographic origin, and exposure to fungal infection. The amount of fermentation time a wine spends in contact with grape skins is also an important determinant of its trans resveratrol content.
The levels of trans resveratrol found in food varies greatly. Red wine contains only a few milligrams per liter, depending on the grape variety, while white wine has much less. This is because red wine is fermented with the skins, allowing the wine to absorb the trans resveratrol, ...
... whereas white wine is fermented after the skin has been removed.
A number of reports have indicated that muscadine grapes generally contain high concentrations of trans resveratrol and that wines produced from these grapes, both red and white, may contain significant amounts. The fruit of the mulberry is also a source of trans resveratrol, and is sold as a nutritional supplement.
Studies have shown that trans resveratrol is an excellent antioxidant, which can help increase physical resistance and improve mental acuity. The chemical compound has been the subject of many medical debates, and studies on trans resveratrol's medicinal value continue to this day. In laboratory experiments performed on mice, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-lowering and other beneficial cardiovascular effects of trans resveratrol have been reported.
Trans resveratrol is also said to reduce or eliminate a variety of ailments such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and joint disease. Those who have eaten resveratrol-rich foods regularly have attested to having improved athletic endurance, ease of exercise and extended human lifespan.
