The United States witnessed around five million auto collisions in 2018. Even though you have not been a part of such an unfortunate event, you are likely burdened with costly vehicle maintenance. This is where car warranties lend a helping hand.
What is a car warranty?
A car warranty is nothing but a vehicle service contract through which the provider agrees to fix certain parts broken due to problems in the manufacturer's design or the overall installation of the vehicle. However, warranties do not usually cover everything related to the car. For example, most warranties don't cover accidental damages or normal wear and tear of the vehicle. Contrastingly, new automobiles come with the first three years or around 30,000 miles (whichever occurs first) of the manufacturer's warranty. These warranties usually do not have deductibles. Car warranties taken after the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty are called extended warranties. Extended warranties are to be purchased independently and come with a deductible.
Types of car warranties
Two main types of car warranties exist:
...
... 1. Manufacturer's warranty and
2. Extended warranty
However, contracts within these two categories do vary to some degree. For example, one manufacturer's warranty may cover more parts for a long time than its counterpart. But at a minimum, it is standard for both types of warranties to cover defects and manufacturing faults.
1. Manufacturer's warranty
Your manufacturer gives this type of warranty to ensure that the vehicle is in its best working condition. In case the car experiences a malfunction or breakage due to the manufacturer's fault, this warranty covers the costs of repairs and replacements of the vehicle. The manufacturer's warranty does not cover damages caused by customers themselves. This car dealer warranty comes in handy with the purchase of most new cars.
2. Extended warranty
The extended warranty comes into effect only after your manufacturer's warranty expires. You can avail of both warranties at once, but only your manufacturer's warranty will remain active. -After the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty, the extended warranty comes into force and covers similar issues as done by the previous one. One of the major advantages of extended warranties is that the customer has a lot of options to choose from in the specifics of the product. There can be notable differences within extended warranties, but most will either fall under an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or an aftermarket warranty.
Car warranty vs car insurance
Car warranties are not compulsory, but car insurance is. It has to be noted that a car warranty only helps with mechanical repairs of your vehicle and will not help with damages caused to others that you are liable for. There are extensive car insurance coverage options available, which can compensate for your vehicle damage, but no form of car warranty exists that covers damages to other cars or people involved in the incident.
Conclusion
Warranties are an important part of the automobile maintenance process. However, these warranty laws may vary from state to state.
