After Chuck and The Good Lie, acclaimed Quebec director Philippe Falardeau continues his quasi-American journey with My Salinger Year. This is the true story of Joanna Rakoff (Margaret Quarrie), an aspiring writer who takes a job at a literary agency representing the famous writer J.D. Salinger. Margaret's boss (Sigourney Weaver) is very strict and demands that all "fan mail" sent to the agency be destroyed and answered by an automated letter. However, Joanna is so overwhelmed by the fan mail that she decides to send a reply herself. But the film has nothing interesting to say about Lakoff, about Salinger, about literature.

What else does this film tell us about Salinger?
How do audiences empathize with a film, especially a biopic, that has no plot? Sure, we see her typing out her reactions, but this is the easiest attempt at characterization since Falardeau's adaptation of C'est pas Moi, Je le jure! is a piece of Léon Doré's warped psyche, but what are we supposed to learn from it?" Is Salinger the god of literature?" Who doesn't know? Who hasn't read The Catcher in the Rye (in general, of course - in most literature classes this book is on the syllabus and anyone who hasn't read it is considered "lucky")? What else does this film tell us about Salinger other than that he is a literary god? What can we learn from Lakoff's experience in the world of broadcasting? Falardeau's answer is not much.

Because the film spends so much time showing us what Lakoff does that we have no access to how it "changed" her life experience and enhances her potential as a writer. It is this experience that may have motivated her to become a writer. But we see very little of it in this film. Instead of focusing solely on Lakoff's view of the same agency, Falardeau focuses too much on the superficial business aspects of the agency.

Sharing the screen with Sigourney Weaver and stealing it
Falardeau seems (really well) only capable of doing one thing. It is a great production with top actors. The plot is as shallow as the pedantic plot of My Salinger Year, and the actors thankfully play it to perfection. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... Margaret Qualley, who won the scene in In Hollywood, continues to prove she's a star. Sharing the screen with Sigourney Weaver and stealing it is no easy feat, but Quarry manages it. Weaver is excellent and creates dynamic chemistry with Colm Feore's Daniel (who is once again overused), and Quarry is phenomenal as the film's lead actor.

But none of the characters are compelling in their own right, as their goals (and those of the director) are inaccessible. Even if Falardeau could direct his actors well, there is no reason for any of them to be in the film. That's because we don't know what story he wants to tell with these characters. There is so much talent in this film that it is incredibly frustrating to watch. Falardeau is talented - he proved it in 2006's Congolema and 2011's Monsieur Lazare - but he has nothing to say in this film. The stars are only 'half' of a good biopic. Without compelling material about these stars, the film is unwatchable. Unfortunately for Falardeau and his colleagues, My Salinger Year falls into this category. Instead, it is much better to watch Falardeau's earlier films again (or for the first time).
