I had no idea how old "The Call of the Wild" was. Remarkably, this story of loyal dogs is over 100 years old! Three different film adaptations have been made since 1923. In that sense, it's like the canine equivalent of A Star is Born. The Call of the Wild can be broken down
As the book was written by Jack London in 1903 and the action takes place in the 1890s, you could almost call it semi-contemporary, but times change, but just as this film has stood the test of time, so has its story. The Call of the Wild can be broken down into a consumable three-parter and the solidity of its narrative structure is fantastic. Buck is a wonderful dog that anyone can hold on to throughout the film.

I imagine people will be disappointed

... journey, he jumps from his family to his owner in California, we see him become a herd leader who suffers physical abuse until he finally meets John Thornton (Harrison Ford), and their dynamic sets up the third act. I imagine people will be disappointed with how much Harrison Ford gets, especially when his name and face are plastered all over the poster, but they shouldn't be as this is a very entertaining story even without his star.

Almost immediately there is a sense of adventure
Despite the star power, the name alone cannot carry the story, the dynamics of Buck and John's characters are an essential part of making this story work, and "The Call of the Wild" plants the seeds of that dynamic well with two brief encounters and a hint of their friendship. When those seeds blossom, it's a very warm friendship in a cold environment. Almost immediately there is a sense of adventure as they wander together into unknown lands. Despite the obvious technical problem, which I will come to later, Harrison Ford performs worthy of the effort invested.

I would move to the Yukon in a heartbeat
This film is always visually stunning; the Yukon landscape is as beautiful in winter as it is in spring. As much as I love my home state, I would move to the Yukon in a heartbeat. We also get some fabulous shots of an iconic scene where we see explorers and prospectors lined up to endure the brutal force of a snowstorm. We hear the phrase "nature at its most beautiful" and The Call of the Wild's depiction of the wild Yukon is a perfect summation of that phrase.

I understand that a real dog can be time-consuming
Now let's move on to something that immediately stands out in this film, and some would say that it completely pulls the film down. Buck, the dog isn't a dog, it's CGI. I can already hear the alarm bells ringing from those who don't want to read this review, but it's understandable why they do. On the one hand, the actions that Buck has to do are too precise for a real dog to do, after all, you can have a well-trained dog that moves where it needs to for a given scene or barks on command, but when it comes to precision, I understand that a real dog can be time-consuming. That being said, the film does use similar photorealism that we saw in the "Lion King" reboot but give it a few years and I guarantee that "The Call of the Wild" will not age well.

Some of his actions and reactions were too human for me
I do have one concern (no pun intended) about films that use CGI with animals, namely that the animals don't behave like animals. Buck is like that, some of his actions and reactions were too human for me. If we replaced all the animal characters with humans, there would be very little difference in what they would do (other than the obvious things that only a dog could do). In the book, you can handle this overly human behavior because there are no visual aids, so it's more taxing on the mind.

The film falls back on making the novel
Most of the characters are sympathetic and decent, but the antagonist Hal (Dan Stevens) gets my teeth crossed. I felt that Dan Stevens' performance was over the top even for a typical stubborn villain, but worse, his character overplays how petty he is. It's fair that his missteps make him that way, but the lengths to which this character will go in the name of revenge are overwhelming. The film falls back on making the novel fit the target audience. A lot of the more mature moments are either taken out or cut out and sadly it doesn't succeed.

Fans of Harrison Ford will not be disappointed
