Discover The Real Core Of The Big Apple In New York''s Neighbourhoods
Think of New York and Manhattan, complete with splendid shiny skyscrapers, iconic yellow taxis, and all the bustle of a world-class metropolis instantly springs to mind. Yet, whilst for a long time, the vivacious and pulsating imagery of mid-town has been the jewel in New York City''s crown, beyond these perimeters there are a multitude of thriving neighbourhoods that give visitors a taste of the real, living ''Big Apple''. From the historic streets of Harlem to the burgeoning boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, New York''s environs have plenty to offer. So grab your metro pass and get to know the city that never sleeps a little better.
Brooklyn Heights
No trip to New York would be complete without that morning walk over John A. Roebling''s emblematic Brooklyn Bridge, so start your exploration here and head for the richly historical and ever vibrant neighbourhood of Brooklyn Heights. All leafy, tree-lined streets and handsomely preserved architecture, the area manages to exude a contemporary energy in its many restaurants and stores, whist retaining all of its original charm. Head to the Promenade at sunset for beautiful ...
... views of the East River, or pay a visit to the borough''s cultural gem, the Brooklyn Museum.
Williamsburg
Moving up north of New York''s most populated borough and we come to the thriving nucleus of hipster culture and all things cool, Williamsburg. A melting pot of many immigrant communities, the area has experienced a rapid gentrification and now boasts a plethora of quirky stores, trendy eateries and an unrivalled nightlife scene. The best of the action is to be found along the main artery of Bedford Avenue where flea market stalls jostle for space alongside vintage shops and health food cafes.
Queens and Astoria
Although not having experienced quite the boom of Williamsburg, Queen''s Astoria is a borough that''s not far behind in the up-and-coming stakes. Formally a Greek enclave, the pulsing heart of Queens is a multicultural treasure complete with excellent taverns and the most diverse cuisine. Beyond this, attractions include the exceptional Isamu Noguchi Museum, and New York''s oldest beer garden, Bohemian Hall.
The Bronx
Famed for its Yankees Stadium, The Bronx is more than just the home of baseball in New York City. Dubbed the ''real Little Italy'', this gritty, buzzing neighbourhood serves up home-cooking alongside imported food stores and family butchers. For a little breathing-space, make for the New York Botanical Garden; an expansive urban oasis that plays host to various concerts, exhibitions and even its own freshwater river.
Harlem
Heading back onto Manhattan, and you come to the heart of New York''s African-American community, Harlem. Having spawned its own cultural Renaissance during the 1920''s, the neighbourhood remains to this day a hub of black social, artistic and political life. Don''t miss a trip to West 125th street on the weekend when families still head to church in their Sunday best and the smell of soul food fills the air.
East Village
Part of the Lower East Side, this dynamic district is the out-and-out rival to hip and happening Williamsburg. Another former immigrant neighbourhood, the area has taken on a trendy edginess with numerous galleries, thrift shops and alternative bars. Make for one of the many remaining local-run eateries that have stood firm in the face of glossy gentrification.
West Village
Finally, one last neighbourhood must-do is a walk around the West Village. Essentially the Lower East Side''s more sophisticated and established older sister; this upmarket district manages to retain a wonderful neighbourhood feel even amongst its chic bars and classy boutique shops. At the heart of the village lies Washington Square Park, which perfect for a summer''s day of picnicing and people-watching. Later on, head to the world-famous Magnolia''s bakery for a taste of something sweet. Bonny Kominek is a freelance writer who has spent a lot of time in the Big Apple. She recommends DAF, who currently offer some great deals on cheap flights to New York.
