It’s hard to avoid the coconut oil bandwagon as it is a topic that has been doing its round over the Internet. Celebrities go gaga over its use as a makeup remover and encourage people to slather some over their skin. But before you introduce it to your beauty routine, don’t you want to know if it would actually suit you? We assume it’s a yes. So, here we are today with another relevant topic on hair products online.

Coconut oil has two very distinct sides - one where it moisturises and softens strands and the other where it clogs the cuticles. The article would take a look into both tales. So, read on till you find if it’s ideal for your hair type or not.

How To Know If Coconut Oil Is Best Suited for Your Hair Type?

Studies reveal that coconut oil causes build-ups on certain hair types. Of course, this hardly applies to fine to medium strands because such hair types greatly benefit from the frequent application. However, those having dry and coarse manes where protein is in excess, mostly suffer from the oil. Hair loss and strands getting brittles are two of the most common consequences for ...
... them.

The rule of thumb is to go for the product only if you have high porosity hair. The risks of blocked cuticles are much less here. Instead, locks better absorb everything and moisturise the strands. For low porosity hair, clogged cuticles are a common issue.

Now how would you know if you have either of the two mane types? It’s simple! Conduct a test, which requires you to take a bowl of water, place a strand in it and observe. If you find the strand to float on the surface, know for certain that yours is less porous. However, if it sinks to the bottom, know that yours is highly porous. Let’s say you find it the midway. In that case, yours is normal.

How To Introduce Coconut Oil into Your Routine?

There is always a set of rules for applying hair styling products. Coconut oil comes up as no exception. We are assuming your hair is porous or normal. Proceed with the following if you are really eager to add it to your hair care regime.

• For pre-shampoo treatment

Most of you may be already aware of this therapy. We are sure many have noticed that it’s so easy to comb through manes after a pre-shampoo treatment. The same locks in moisture and causes little to no damage when it’s wet. Ever wondered why? It’s because oil lowers water absorption at the time of shampooing. Hence, the effectiveness!

• Use it to control frizz and mend split ends

The best way to deal with split ends is by chopping off your manes. However, the application of oil in-between trimming works equally fine. More than that, it’s great for taming frizz. How do you think it happens? Lubricants like these prevent hair from absorbing moisture when the humidity in the atmosphere is the highest. However, when the temperature drops, oil plays a reverse role. It penetrates shafts and softens curls.

• As an overnight mask

All you need to do is part your strands and evenly apply the mask between each. Make sure the oil is warm and not hot for the cuticles to open up and absorb the product. Aim for the strand ends, where the hair is the driest. However, you may skip the scalp if you have thin tresses. Otherwise, you may end up weighing them down too much. Also, go for this overnight mask only at night and take necessary precautions to prevent your pillow cover from getting oil stains.

• To enhance the effects of the conditioner

Coconut oil offers the best results when applied with moisturising products. Since a conditioner is one such product, seal your manes with oil post-application and leave it untouched for at least 15 minutes. Then, enjoy softer and stronger hair!

• Define curls

It’s hard to retain curls for long. This is why experts recommend mixing coconut oil with gels or curl creams to retain the ringlets for quite some time. Apply to damp hair for ultimate results. Soft, dreamy curls are no longer a distant dream. Thanks to coconut oil!

• To protect your hair from sea salt & chlorine

Chlorine and sea salt can be disastrous to strands. Therefore, always wear your swimming cap or apply coconut oil generously before taking the dips. Since oil naturally creates a barrier around strands in water, you shall ultimately save your locks from the damaging effects of the water in swimming pools.

In the end, we would discourage you to use coconut oil as hair styling products. The same may harden up when the temperature plummets and stiffen up your strands. Moreover, manes applied with oil appears greasy. There is no way you would like to step out during such conditions. Instead, go for hair products online that have coconut oil extracts in them.
