Ford Engines That Will Define The First Half Of This Decade
Ford Motor Company has long been a blue-badged symbol of confidence in motor technology. From humble beginnings off the first crude assembly line to the newest, fastest racing machine on the track, Ford engines continue to prove themselves in innovation and versatility.
Fusion Hybrid
New for 2010 is the 2.5L Atkinson I4 engine and electric motor, found in the Ford Fusion Hybrid. This engine supplies two separate means of propulsion: an electric motor and the 2.5L Atkinson-Cycle I4 Hybrid engine. The electric motor is powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery, which has up to three times the capacity of a more common nickel-cadmium battery. This electric motor allows for speeds up to 47 miles per hour before combining with the hybrid engine to add even more power, ie: highway speeds. These Ford engines provide a seamless transfer from gas to electric mode, and vice-versa.
Mustang (V-6)
Next on the roster of fuel-efficient Ford engines is the Ford Mustang V-6, with Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing, or TiVCT technology, which allows for up to 31 miles ...
... to the gallon (hwy). This 3.7L V-6 still manages to crank out 306 hp, using four valves per cylinder and TiVCT.
Taurus
The Taurus returns in 2010 with a standard 3.5L V-6 and 263 hp. Add the SHO package and those numbers swell to 365 hp, thanks to the 3.5L twin-turbocharged direct-injection Eco-Boost V-6, all without sacrificing precious fuel economy at 25 miles per gallon (hwy).
Festiva (US build)
Perhaps the most fuel-efficient model is the new Ford Festiva, with best-in-class mileage of a whopping 40 miles per gallon (hwy). These Ford engines come in the form of a peppy 1.6L DOHC I4 engine offering 120 hp with variable timing setup.
Raw Power?
Gas-efficiency is necessary in this day and age, but where's the fun? Ford engines have an answer to that question to, with succulent offerings in the Ponycar's 2011 model year.
Shelby GT500 Mustang (limited availability)
Fresh out of the gate for 2011, the Shelby GT500 is certainly the kingpin of the Ford engines. With a new 5.4L four valves per cylinder supercharged aluminum block V-8 engine, it thunders out an impressive 540 hp making it the fastest Mustang in production—ever. With a face-melting 0-60 mph in a scant 4.2 seconds, it is truly the value of the decade for Ford engines if you happen to like power.
Putting 'Super' in Super Duty
The all-new 6.7 Power Stroke V-8 Turbo Diesel is the most capable fuel-efficient heavy-duty on the market and the absolute workhorse of all Ford engines. With 390 hp and 735 lb-ft of torque already impressive numbers, Ford engines continues to innovate using the first compacted graphite iron, or CGI, engine block in a Super Duty-class in North America. Stronger than cast iron, this CGI structure is ideal for reduced weight and maximum integrity to meet the demands of this higher torque and more horsepower in 2011.
All in all, Ford engines demonstrate fully the renewed determination and ability to maintain a high-standard class of perfection, blended with innovation and technology. In Ford, we can certainly trust—now and for generations to come.
