Gaming technology is becoming smarter by the day, as evidenced by the thriving sector of E-Sports.

Online gaming has grown to be one of the most popular sports in the world, with some colleges now granting full-ride scholarships for its E-sport teams.

While a burgeoning gaming industry provides many opportunities for organisations, it also carries with it an increase in fraud dangers.
Because they maintain several payment credentials on file, allow relative anonymity, and lack essential regulatory procedures and Know Your Customer checks, gaming platforms are becoming increasingly appealing to fraudsters.

Gamers are vulnerable to fraud, and many do not realise they have been hacked, allowing hackers enough time to make fraudulent purchases using the victim's information.

Players of online video games such as 'Roblox,' 'Fortnite,' and 'Fifa' were recently urged to be on the lookout for scammers, amid fears that gangs were targeting the platforms.

Most common type of fraud is Account Takeover (ATO)

Account Takeover (ATO) fraud is the most common sort of fraud, in which fraudsters ...
... hide behind actual accounts to engage in abusive behaviour such as sending spam and scams.

In 'League of Legends,' for example, players complained about accounts being used to send spam messages with offers of free skins and Riot Points.

The hacked account provides a link that, when clicked, demands a player to enter their login and password in order to obtain the content; however, the player's information is phished, potentially allowing their account to be taken over as well.

As technology advances, scammers labour relentlessly to circumvent the system.

As a result, they've created shady websites that give game-related tips and tricks. When you download their products, they install some form of spyware, which is tough to remove once it is on your machine.
Fortunately, these are some of the most simple to avoid. When you download a new programme, game, or application, make sure you receive it from an official source.

What does RUSI’s study tell?

According to a study conducted by RUSI, the UK's top military and security think tank, internet games, particularly huge multiplayer online role-playing games, have long been suspected of providing opportunities for fraudsters to launder money.

One of the fundamental aspects enabling online game laundering is that virtual, in-game objects can occasionally have real-world worth outside of the game.

In an effort to combat money laundering, Valve (a video game publisher and digital distribution business that counts 'Counter Strike' among its most popular titles) has prohibited the trading of container keys needed to buy in-game products.

This is due to the fact that nearly all important purchases on the marketplace are thought to be fake.

What precautions should one take?

Always buy a game via the official website and be wary of malicious links that drive you to third-party websites.

Personal information, identifying data, or account information should never be shared online.

Respond to emails or direct message requests for banking, financial, or personal information with caution.

For the game login, choose a strong password. A strong password is one that is difficult to guess and contains a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols.

Make use of two-factor authentication. This means that you, as well as anyone else attempting to access your account, will require two pieces of identification to log in – typically, your password and phone number.
Also, never click on any links that require you to re-enter your password. Instead, delete any email requesting that you update your login details.
