Whenever you think of bulletproof luxury cars in India, you almost always find that the SUVs dominate most of the segments as far as popularity is concerned. I mean, how often do you spot a high-end politician or a great movie star travelling in public using a hatchback or a sports car? Thing is, there is always a certain reverence around larger vehicles that seems to be a common theme among the armoured vehicle manufacturers in this country.

And if you observe that, you might be correct. Most manufacturers often market their capabilities with the cars in the ballpark of the bulletproof land cruiser price in India. There have been specific armouring packages that cater to nothing but full-sized SUVs. But why are such cars so popular for this treatment? Let’s take a deep dive and find out.

Oh, this is something that armoured vehicle manufacturers the world over adore about large SUVs. Their sheer size is perfect for bolting on ballistic steel without much problems. The added weight increases the chassis’ safety and makes it more predictable around ...
... the turns. In most SUVs, the body panels are all single-form, making them easier to remove and reinstall during the bulletproofing process.

Usually, the wheelbase of large SUVs is measured in metres. This makes it easier for them to have upgrades for suspension and brakes to cope with the extra weight of the armour without much trouble. The wider wheel arches also allow for the easier installation of run-flat tyres, which are often bigger in size than their regular counterparts.

For bullet-resistant (BR) glass, the thickness needs to be ample to not only accommodate its width but to function normally with the added weight as well. That is another reason why most manufacturers pitch the bulletproof land cruiser price in India over the price of say, a bulletproof Mercedes-Benz E-Class. SUVs generally have thick door frames that allow for increased protection level with a bulkier BR glass along with allocation for heavy-duty hinges for easier operation.

OK, now we’re talking. Most bulletproof luxury cars in India require an engine upgrade to keep the performance up after being armoured. However, that is a rare addition in many large SUVs, like the Toyota Fortuner or the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, as they come with a turbocharged diesel engine from the get-go capable of delivering a lot of power and torque on demand to all wheels, saving the armoured car manufacturer the hassle of upgrading the drivetrain.

Inside the cabin, the armouring process eats up a lot of room in favour of protection. If you have Kevlar coverings on the floor, bullet-catchers on the windows, and MS sheaths between the seats, you sacrifice a lot of cubic feet of wiggle room. Thankfully, that is not much of a trouble in large SUVs, that have enough space to let the armour find its way in and still avail luxuries like premium upholstery, dual-zone climate control, massaging seats, and extra power outlets for passengers.

So now, we hope you understand that is not just about overcompensating. Large-sized SUVs bring a lot of technical advantages to the table that many armoured car manufacturers covet. Of course, you can bulletproof a luxury sedan as well, but it would take much more time, money, and effort that you can save by choosing a full-size SUV instead.
