Calcium is one of the main ingredients that our body requires for vascular contraction and vasodilatation, nerve transmission, muscle functioning and hormonal secretion.
While growing up, milk and milk products are something that a household have as mandatory food. Every kid in the house knows that milk is the key to healthy bones. There is a reason for this to say that milk is one of the primary and easiest sources of calcium that is available everywhere domestically and commercially. But it is also suggested that one should not completely rely on milk as a single source of calcium and should look out for other options as well. There has always been a debate around whether having only milk would complete your calcium requirement to the body.
Based on age the calcium requirement of the body differs. As you grow up, your intake demands increase and there is a required value that has been suggested by the WHO. Milk and milk products like cheese, butter etc. are good sources of calcium. In fact, farm fresh cow's milk has good bioavailability which means its absorption rate stands between 30%-35%. But when we talk ...
... about some green vegetables like broccoli and kale, they have a good absorption rate but the calcium content is less.
There are some components in green food that can hinder the availability of calcium in plants. These foods have oxalic and phytic acids which bind with the calcium to form an insoluble complex which slows down the calcium absorption. To understand this point easily, you can say that if you have Spinach right after having a glass of milk that would slow down the absorption of calcium into your body. It is also not recommended to have high fiber food like grains, wheat bran just after having your glass of milk as these would interfere in the consumption of calcium into your body. So, it is advised to plan accordingly the intake of food one should be having.
It might not be possible for everyone to always get a glass of fresh and pure milk every day but that should not stop anyone from having milk products. You can have a good amount of cheese in pizza and that would also contribute to your calcium intake through milk products.
If you are considering strengthening your bone, you can also consider other ways of doing so. Apart from calcium, you should also get vitamin D through food, Sun, and medicines for your bones. It is recommended that 1000 IU of Vitamin D be required by your body every day.
Exercise regularly to keep your body fit. And when we say that, consider doing weight-bearing exercises.
Finally, to conclude, milk and milk products may not be the only source of calcium, including them as part of a healthy diet makes it easier to meet calcium requirements.
