Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) registers professional engineers. This registration as a professional engineer allows an engineer to practice engineering in this Canadian province.

To become a registered professional engineer, you need to make the first step by becoming an engineer-in-training. Engineering in training means that you have fulfilled the academic requirements for the license as a professional engineer. It doesn’t matter whether you are experienced or not or from which country you come.

The following is the list of situations of an engineer-in-training. So, choose yours:
1.Canadian Graduate engineer in training: if you are holding a Canadian bachelor’s degree in engineering, then your degree must be recognized by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). In this case, you should apply under the engineer-in-training-Canadian Graduate category.
2.Already Licensed with APEGS engineering-in-training: In case APEGS has issued you the license before, then you have to re-apply.
3.International Graduate engineering-in-training: ...
... in case of having a bachelor's degree from any other country or a Canadian degree that is not recognized by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, you are required to apply under the engineer-in-training-International Graduate category.
4.Engineer-in-training somewhere else in Canada: if being an engineer-in-training or fulfilling the academic requirement for licensure in any other province of Canada, then you can apply via a simplified process available by means of Inter-Association Mobility.

Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) benefits for engineer-in-training:
Competency-Based Assessment is helpful for candidates for the reporting process and in taking care of transparency. Therefore, engineers are advised to switch to the CBA system even if having already submitted the reports.

You can take the help of the experience reports submitted on a prior basis in the outgoing, paper-based system and take information from there for the new CBA system. Now, let’s move to the benefits of CBA for engineers-in-training:
1.It allows you to gauge your experience and qualification, which boosts your confidence to write the report for submission.
2.There are indicators, offering helpful insights for the competencies.
3.It is more quantitative and objective. There is a rating scale from 0 to 5. Assessors use this scale for validation.
4.Only 34 examples are needed: you need to give 34 competencies from any time of your professional engineering career. You don’t need to provide 54 or more examples in the outgoing and paper-based system. It is not like the paper-based system where a specific timeframe is there to report the examples.
5.It is online: you don’t need to get signatures in a paper-based system. The online system eases the entry of every type of information and sharing notifications.
6.There is no need for more coordination via email for validation and APEGS. However, interim assessment is an exception, you should look for details in the competency guide. Entries can be downloaded as PDFs.

How to move to the new CBA system of APEGS:
You can utilize the experience examples from the experience reports that are submitted outgoing and paper-based systems. The Experience Review Committee will not refer to the already-submitted reports for the CBA assessment process.

So, you must ensure to use information from there if you want the report to be taken into account.
