Engagement Ring History And Tradition
An engagement ring is a long-time tradition that dates back centuries. In ancient times, an engagement ring was a sign that the bride had received a dowry, today it is a romantic symbol of love and promise.
An engagement ring is a promise of marriage, given to a bride to be when her future husband proposes to her, a romantic gesture of devotion and commitment. An engagement ring is circular, curling around your finger without a beginning or end, it's eternal. It symbolises infinity, faithfulness, and eternal love.
The meaning of an engagement ring has changed over the course of history from ancient times through to today. In ancient times, they believed that your ring finger was directly connected to the heart, so an engagement ring was always placed on the left hand, the same side as the heart.
In the middle ages, women wore a ring as a promise of marriage. It was forbidden to wear a ring for any other reason. Soon two rings became popular, two rings that could be worn together. Men wore their rings until their wedding, handing them to the woman. She would wear the ring as a wedding band.
Today, ...
... engagement rings are an official announcement of an imminent wedding in the near future. Women wear the engagement ring and usually, the man will select and purchase the ring. These days, tradition has fallen by the wayside with many couples choosing the engagement ring together.
In some countries, the value of the engagement ring may be important, based on the man’s income. Some still believe that the engagement ring should be at least three months of the man’s salary. Others are happy to make their selection based on a budget they can afford. The material and diamond also play an important role, as for many women, their engagement ring is important and should meet their expectations.
Engagement rings are still worn today and remain fashionable. Before diamond engagement rings became a tradition, they were only reserved for aristocrats who were willing to marry rich citizens in upper-class societies. For anyone else, it was a piece of precious metal, as diamonds were too expensive.
Salaries increased in the 1950s, which enabled more men to give their partners a ring when they got engaged. This meant that the upper-class engagement rings became a tradition for all. The number of couples wearing engagement rings has increased exponentially since the 1970s.
Today men don't wear engagement rings, rather surprising their partners when they propose. Men choose to wear a ring from their wedding day and onwards. Many men see the investment as a romantic gesture, something unique that they won't need to buy again.
The engagement ring today remains a firm tradition when a couple decides to get engaged and married. It's a sparkling ring she can show off to her friends and family as a sign of love, promise, and future.
