What Does It Take To Become A Cricket Coach?
A successful cricket coach must firstly be passionate about the game and must be in a good position to promote and coach it to others. Cricket tradition and values should be taught in addition to the technical aspects of the game. It is important to recognise the benefits of being involved in the sport and the enjoyment, social and fitness benefits that can result. Winning is not everything and this is especially the case when coaching kids cricket. Here we will discuss the skills that make up a successful coach.
Organiser - The role of a coach can be considered a management role and organisation plays a key part. Training sessions and matches will need to be planned, venues booked, equipment prepared and players/parents must be kept informed of what is happening and when.
Risk Assessor - It is important that a coach carries out risk assessments before every session, highlighting potential hazards and describing the proposed safety measures.
Communicator - A coach must be able to express their observations to a player along with their proposed solution to a problem. If the player knows exactly what they ...
... are doing wrong, then they stand a better chance of improving. The coach should be able to effectively communicate with people of all backgrounds and ages. Questioning is commonly used when coaching kids, this requires that the player thinks about their own technique and suggest ways that it could be improved.
Counsellor - Coaches will be dealing with people from different backgrounds. Often players will turn to a coach for advice and it is important that the coach learns to deal with players emotional needs in addition to their technical needs.
First Aider - All coaches should be suitably trained in basic first aid and CPR. Cricket can be a dangerous game and the coach must be prepared to deal with any accidents that arise. It will be useful to know if players suffer from any medical conditions; this will not necessarily exclude a player from playing the game but will make a coach aware of special requirements. A coach should also take reasonable steps to avoid sports injuries by suitably warming and cooling players before and after a session.
Motivator - Firstly, a cricket coach should be able to motivate himself in order to put in the time and effort required. They must also be able to motivate the players during training sessions and in match situations.
Role Model - This is especially the case when coaching kid’s cricket. Children will look up to their coach and will follow their lead. It is important that coaches conduct themselves in a manner that sets a good example to the players.
