On the basis of APEGS Self-Assessment or Competency-Based Assessment (CBA), you can show your competencies as an engineer. By means of this, you can show whether you have made progress or not to get yourself registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng).
Furthermore, you must also remember that your competency must be validated and signed by an expert in engineering.

What are competency and its components?

In simple terms, competency can be defined as the ability to perform roles and responsibilities as per the criteria recognized and expected by employers and the community as a whole.

The common competencies of engineering environment work experience are given in the competency framework. These competencies are important to make sure that all is going ok in engineering practice and public safety in all disciplines by a professional engineer.
Competency is a medium to assess the capability. It can be shown using examples from actual work experience. To evaluate the competency of a professional engineering candidate for licensure, their performance in the situations they faced ...
... must be assessed and their ability to tackle such situations if coming in the future must also be assessed.

As a result, the candidate has to show their ability to use their engineering knowledge safely and reliably in all circumstances in a competency-based assessment system. Apart from that, they also need to show their recognizing skills of professional limits. Besides that, they need to be prepared to either develop and boost their expertise or call other sources for support.

You must provide detailed examples for a proper APEGS self assessment competency so that APEGS evaluators can have a clear understanding of your experience and knowledge in those areas that are important for effective and safe engineering practice.
To help you with this, we have provided below a list of the competency category that is a group of skills and competencies:

1. Technical competence
2. Communication
3. Project and finance management
4. Team effectiveness
5. Accountability of a professional
6. Environmental, social and economic and sustainability
7. Personal continuing professional development or CPD

For public safety and effective practice, you must take these seven categories into account. They are also essential for all disciplines of a professional engineer to show their competence.
Each of the competency categories contains the necessary list of main competencies. To fulfil the competency requirements, you must meet the average level of competency in all competency categories.

Validation and evaluation

Validation is a must for APEGS self assessment. An individual who knows you directly, professionally and personally has to validate the examples along with the competency examples.
The first step of assessment is after the validation of all the examples. Apart from that, the assessment also includes the review of the competency examples and validator comments by the assessors from the regulator. All competency examples have to be rated by every individual like the assessors, applicant and validators on a six-point rating scale (0-5).
You are strictly advised to check for regular specific criteria with the regulator you are applying for. You should read all experience reporting guidelines completely and understand them before you start your work experience submission. When you do this, you reduce the chances of re-submission and increase the chances of success.
