Akshaya Chaitanya, An Ngo In Mumbai Providing Free Food In Public Hospitals

Akshaya Chaitanya is an NGO in Mumbai with the vision “To open up a world of opportunities for every vulnerable by ensuring food security”. In line with this, the NGO initiated the Hospital Feeding Programme in July 2021 to provide free and nutritious meals to the underprivileged people in the city’s public hospitals. Akshaya Chaitanya is implementing this programme in partnership with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Government of Maharashtra. This NGO strives to ensure no one goes hungry while taking care of their sick family members through its Hospital Feeding Programme. It prepares locally palatable, nutritious meals at its state-of-the-art, FSSAI certified kitchen in Byculla, Mumbai.
Need for Hospital Feeding Programme
Around 15 million people from low-income and marginalised backgrounds rely on public hospitals for treatment. Though the treatment cost is much lesser than private hospitals, yet patients and their families struggle to meet the cost. The burden of treatment cost leads them to empty all their savings (if any), borrow from friends and relatives, take loan from money lenders ...
... as well as cut cost by giving up on basic needs, including food.
Akshaya Chaitanya’s Hospital Feeding Programme addresses the food needs of out-patients and attenders of in-patients. Through this, the NGO aims at upholding health of needy people as well as support them in their effort to save money for treatment. When you choose Akshaya Chaitanya as one of the charities to donate to in Mumbai, you directly address the silent hunger situation that prevails across public hospitals in the city.
Impact of Hospital Feeding Programme
In the last four months since inception, Akshaya Chaitanya has already served a cumulative of 97,546 meals. The NGO serves lunch to 1,880 beneficiaries daily. It began by serving in four hospitals namely, St. George Hospital, Cama & Albless Hospital, Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, and BYL Nair Hospital; and recently expanded its service to three more public hospitals. Akshaya Chaitanya looks forward to adding more hospitals under its umbrella of service in the near future.
This NGO in Mumbai is also endeavouring to add other feeding initiatives to support food needs of children and other vulnerable sections of the society.
